I’ve almost finished On Writing, and because the book has already been such a tremendous help to a beginner like myself, I felt compelled to write a note of gratitude to the King.
Mr King, you may never see this, but your methods and views about writing have completely resonated with the little I have already learnt since starting to write earlier this year. Your words have been a source of great comfort when my confidence has wavered, or when I have needed answers to burning questions. Your book ticks both boxes with plenty of humour thrown in!
I really like how you explain “basement” thinking, digging up a “fossil” of a story, favouring spontaneous creation over plotting, and the importance of continuity and writing “as fast as the Gingerbread man runs”. And much, much more.
Your wife Tabby deserves a medal for fishing your Carrie manuscript out of the bin all those years ago. As do you for your persistence in finishing it. That story (and everything else you’ve achieved) is an inspiration to any beginner.
Eternally grateful,
Esme
