I know I've been using tickets to keep my mark in a book. I would definitely keep a bookmark card with me at all times.

Well, it turns out they're quite a bit more expensive.

The cards with the "grandpa" logo (what you see with my posts) have been a hit with the people who have gotten them.

MEANWHILE.....

To those who have read my stuff, whether you like it or not, PLEASE avail yourself to leave a review on Amazon. It helps! And thank you.

My apologies! Can I just give my name and titles and say, "Go to Amazon," or should I not do that? I'm really appreciative for this section and don't want to abuse the generosity.
No problem--I understand how it happened and was just a misunderstanding on your and Tery's part. You can do that and if anyone asks for the direct link, you're welcome to send that to them privately.

Thank you, ma'am.

So if anyone's curious, you can search on Amazon for "Chance Encounter," "Out of Time," and "Up and Down" by Jason Meadors. If you want a direct link, I can send that to you privately.

:)

Think we need a Moderator refresher course. ;-D No links are allowed that go to sites where the item being promoted is being sold.

Back in the '70s, there was a court reporting school in Lakewood, CO, called Mile High [Reporting] College. It's where I learned my mad steno skilz, yup. :D It's gone now, tragically like so many other court reporting schools. It's been a great career.

Baseline certification is 225 words a minute, and I passed that long ago.

I went to a local writers convention, and one of the speakers there was a pretty well-known (although not by me at the time) published author, Grant Blackwood. I was chatting with him in the evening, the unpolished novice talking to Mr. Successful, and the one moment of raw respect reflected in his eyes was when I told him what I did for a living, and that I could write that way creatively, and when I did, 100 words per minute was ridiculously slow.

Believe it or not our minimum standard is to achieve one hour and 25 minutes of transcriptions per day. That does not sound like a lot but if you had to listen to the dictators you would be surprised.

Oh, it's a lot. I know. Transcription time from typing is usually at least three times the time of recording, and it varies for so many things - quality of the speaker(s), quality of the audio, quality of the speaker(s), how long the pauses are, the material and terminology, the quality of the speaker(s)... (we're seeing the pattern here, right?)

....and a goodly amount of medical "professionals" can't speak clear English, even the native born ones....it's one thing I've been proud of in my broadcast career-the ability to still be intelligible, even at a rapid-fire speech rate...i.e.-having to cram 45 seconds of copy into a 30 second opening.....

Grandpa, are your writings in actual book form, or only ebook? If book form, I suggest you have some with you at the KingKon. And I suggest that to all authors who will be attending the Kon. If I was going, I would buy all of your books and have you sign them!

Right, they're e-book only. I had this mass of writing that I was told to do something with, and since you don't break out on the scene with novellas and short stories, Kindle Direct Publishing presented the path of least resistance.

In a little writers group that I'm in, we had a guest appearance of a local romance writer. She says it's pretty much a full-time job, because she has to produce about five titles a year. Some or her books go the traditional route of agent/editor/publisher, but she said that she likes to self-publish more because the money is so much better.

So I'm not opposed to self-publishing. But it looks to me that to make a go of that, it becomes a full-time job not only being a publisher and writer but being promotional. And I already have a full-time job.

Well, we live in interesting times. I'll keep writing stories, worthy or not. Writers gotta write.
