I’m reading your book “On Writing” and the part giving me a plot to use to write didn’t do too much. While listening, I thought about what I could write about (what I know). At first I thought about the pain I’ve brought to myself since I was seventeen with rewriting my life over and over and over again. Hoping for it to come true and jump off the pages (I’ve rewritten it so much down to what classes I should’ve taken in high school, it could be as long as your novel “it”). I would Add in family members that never existed and trips I wish I could’ve gone on. Heck, I would even add in things I wish I could’ve had at the time. This regurgitated something that comes on frequently in my day to day life ,but I never thought to really dig deep into.
Why do I like to rewrite my life?
What’s the purpose of doing this?
.....Am I crazy?
Hopefully this will be something that I will stick with. ✌ Hey! It is my life.
And who knows my life better than myself?
P.S.(I’m also reading “everything is f*cked - a book about hope”.You should read it some time. Mark Manson is a good writer.)

I'm not Stephen, I'm just a semi-successful student. But maybe I can help.

I would say that the majority of us insert aspects of our lives, not to mention characters from our past, into our stories. We just give them a thick coat of paint and change their names to protect the guilty.

At some level you have to think: If I can't be an example that makes the lives of the next generation better, why did I go through all of that **** in the first place?

And so we talk about what went right, and what went wrong, and what we would change if we could. And our peers read it and they nod sadly. And their kids read it and they become ensorcelled by this other world. Because it seems so real. Yeah, well, guess what... it was real at some level. That's the author's curse: Every hell that we represent, we have to walk through.

You aren't crazy. Well, at least not for that. Playing 'What If?' is a time honoured tradition. You just need to take the next step, if your writing is for the consumption of others. Dress it up. Find out what your audience likes and relate your story to what they care about.

Best of luck.

Howdy Anonymous, In this crazy world there are many pockets of sunshine. One should always gravitate towards those. Not much in the world has changed since the advent of civilization we just hear more about it because of the constant never ending stream of information. Constantly re-inventing yourself is a common thought path, as Bill mentioned above, but there will always be a core you. The world is a stage and we each must play our part...:)
