48 states, no zip codes, party lines on telephones if you lived in more rural areas, you had to pay extra to have phone extension lines, teachers told us we would soon have to be learning the metric system as the country would be converting to metric--and probably more I'm not thinking of at the moment back in the day when I was growing up.

My mom worked the telephone system and hated party lines. I find the concept of party lines to be interesting, and wonder why they got rid of party lines, sounds like a hoot

When I was child, we did not worry about being taken by a stranger. We played gasp outside. We drank water from a hose and even rode bikes without helmets. We rode around in cars without seat belts. There were clearly winners and losers in game. We played dodge ball in school and had some welts to prove it. Was a different time for sure

I,rember when I was about 5 or 6 we had a story about a little girl who was kidnapPed in her front yard playing and she was taken. I was a chatty child and whould go up to random people and just talk to them freely. All that changed after the little girl was kidnaped and found murded. It was hard for me as I could not understand why I could not talk to random people. My parents used to say crystal no, do you whant to be hurt like that child on tv? And I was like no, it toke a while for me to understand. I was sort of the start of the whole the world is a scary place.. I was born in 1981

Is this the one where you have to use the strips of paper or something to get some of your poop on it? My mom hates it and it looks gross

Hahaha - all kidding aside, if it saves you from the following, maybe it's worth the trouble

...it was anything but, considering you had trouble getting a free line and then when you did-you had no idea how many of the local snoops that were on the same exchange would be listening in....no privacy a'tall.....

Or they would leave the line open just for the heck of it, so you could not place an outgoing call.

These people must have been pretty bored if they had to live vicariously through their neighbors. I remember picking up the party line in the country when my parents had one - you could hear 'click, click, click' as the snoops came on.

I think party lines were created for the folks who weren't so well off. We had one at our house in rural Pennsylvania when I was a kid. I think there were two other families on our line and we all shared the cost if I remember correctly. Bored kids (myself included) would try to sneak on the line and listen in. I think each home had their own distinctive ring so you would know who was receiving a call.

Rural area so first phone lines were only party lines. Yes to the distinctive rings.

I'm 50, though I most times don't feel any different than when I was 13--lol. The only time I really think about my age is when I get out of bed (sometimes it ain't easy, though better after my 3-4 mi morning walk) and sometimes at work when I realize that 2 of my coworkers are younger than my oldest child, my boss is 35, and the two that are my age both have married children and are grandchild hungry. That is so WEIRD to me!

Oh, and of all the things I've lost over the years, I miss my eyebrows the most. They went from Leonid Brezhnev forests to little Hitler 'staches right over my irises alarmingly quickly after 40.
