Mid-September to the early part of November is probably my favourite time of year. I like winter - I prefer being too cold to too warm - but there's something about autumn that acts like a bit of a security blanket but also speaks of new opportunities and fresh starts (much more so than New Year, for me). Of course, that could just be a piece of institutionalization held over from school days.
But...crunchy leaves. I remember them. We don't seem to get them now. They used to be all over by early-mid October, but now it seems by the time you get the really brown ones it's always too wet.
Maybe it was always so and a simple trick of the memory suggests otherwise, but there you go.
