I'm not sure what you mean by cultural references. You're not missing much. I'm a huge Ed Norton fan, but like Titanic (except without the cool effects) the only reason to watch is to "get" the cultural references.

All I know, you aren't supposed to talk about fight club -- I know nothing else about it.Me neither. Everybody days it's really good, but the subject matter, or what it seems to be, has never appealed to me. I should probably just watch it and find out for myself.
It will blow your mind. No joke. All I know, you aren't supposed to talk about fight club -- I know nothing else about it.
Sure you don't.All I know, you aren't supposed to talk about fight club -- I know nothing else about it.
Historically comedies are not considered as seriously by Hollywood as dramas and melodramas. Neither are other genres.Seems like a movie has to have a brooding character in order to be considered a classic. And are comedies written off completely? Like PITH, I think The Thin Man and Topper are classics
I've seen all of these. Some Like It Hot is my favorite of the bunchClassics
I thought I'd bump this older thread. Hollywood Reporter has a list of the 100 Best Hollywood movies. I wonder who us has seen which of them and what we think of them, why they're considered "classics". I won't list the top ten as I figure talk of those is old news; I'll start with 40-49...
40. Fight Club (1999)
41. Psycho (1960)
42. Alien (1979)
43. Toy Story (1995)
44. The Matrix (1999)
45. Titanic (1997)
46. Saving Private Ryan (1998)
47. Some Like it Hot (1959)
48. The Usual Suspects (1995)
49. Rear Window (1954)
I've seen nine of these ten. Of those nine my favorites are Rear Window, Psycho, The Usual Suspects, Some Like it Hot, and Alien.
For me, #40 and #48 are the most overrated. 'Meh' (for me) at best.I've seen them all. 41 is the best, imo.
The first time I saw 43 was in the movies and I was in awe. I couldnt even describe it. It wasn't a "cartoon" but it wasn't live action.
44 and 49 are overrated.
As for 45, the main reason to see that is because of the vast amount of cultural references (she so could've made room for him on that wood).
46 was my 2nd favorite movie that year.
I never get tired of watching 48.
Agree. One of the alltime great comedies.I've seen all of these. Some Like It Hot is my favorite of the bunch
That's the point of the movie? The musical score and special effects really make it timeless, poor Kubrick went to his grave too soon.11. 2001: A Space Odyssey (too lengthy, too surreal, makes you think too much)
