North Carolina's governor made an executive order yesterday closing all hair salons for a minimum of 30 days. The order takes effect at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday). While I understand the need to be cautious, I'm not sure what I'm going to do for money. As a self employed person, I do not qualify for unemployment. Trying to look for the bright spot, but it's becoming difficult not to become depressed.
Just remember, you aren't alone. So many people scared right now of no money coming in and bills to pay, food to buy. Hopefully there are people in your life who'll reach out with a bag of groceries or just to chat so you don't feel so alone

Can you have customers come to your house? You know, wink wink, to visit and have a cup of coffee and ooops, I just happened to fix her hair? cash in hand for a "donation" to your favorite charity?

I convinced the large home improvement business I work part-time at is run by a bunch of corporate idiots. They do love the national media attention of putting out press releases saying how they care for their employees and are taking measure to protect the staff and customers. But just about every employee who has submitted a request to stay home due to being exposed to someone with COVID-19, or someone in the household that has acquired it, (guidelines set by corporate) are being denied for some reason. Plus, after public shaming for not altering operating hours the corporate geniuses decided to close at 8:30 pm starting yesterday to avoid negative any more negative press - an put out a nice self glamorizing press release. At 8:35 pm we were called to a staff meeting. They handed out a sheet of paper noting what had to be disinfected and wiped down between 8:30 – 11 pm by us, going forward every evening – MANDATORY. Wipe downs must take place twice a day, midday and late evening. I looked at the sheet and asked where our gloves, disinfectant, and rags were in order to complete the task. The store manager looked at me and said every department was provided a bucket with the necessary items. I asked were ours was because we had no such bucket... No department got such a bucket. Seems nobody had the brains to make sure we had what we needed, and apparently the store decided to sell all our disinfectant and gloves to customers and kept none for store use. So management scrambled and found two half empty spray bottles of disinfectant that two departments had hidden away and half a box of disposable gloves (we do have expensive 3 packs of gloves available for sale but were not allowed to use them because they were too expensive). So I look for some spray bottles so the disinfectant could be shared between departments. Of course we sold out of them, too. I did find two used ones and divided the disinfectant up. But no more disinfectant is now left. At the end of the evening I asked the manager if he called other stores in our district to see if any of them were smart enough to keep some disinfectant and disposable gloves on hand so we could send someone tomorrow morning to pick some up? He starred at me for a moment, said ‘no’ and walked away from . I think management will be avoiding me this evening, or talk to me about an attitude adjustment. I think their best bet would be to avoid me. :)

The problem is that these corporate types honestly do not care about the workers. They only care about money, it's as simple as that, regardless of all the "We love our workers!" Hope everything is okay, Dio. Stay out of the way of these American Psychos!

It's a LOT more complicated than that and the airlines are already having so few passengers that they're considering the option of shutting down voluntarily.
China locked down the most infected province completeley through using martial law, they haven't had a new case in nearly a week. It's an extreme situation and extreme situations call for extreme measures! I got that from a film ... wonder which one though?

Can you have people come to your house? You might be able to call some of your good customers and get a little business while this is going on.

Maybe you could set up outside for safety purposes.

Sorry to hear that, Sunny. I understand caution but do these governors realize so many people won't have businesses to come back to after it is all over as they'll be out of business by these long-term draconian measures? What... People aren't smart enough to wear gloves and masks and use hand sanatizer if they work?

You could try applying at one of the two big national home improvement centers, temporarily, until you're back open for business again. They're open and in desperate need of staff right now... especially seasonal staff.

If people thought the 2008 recession was bad, just wait until this subsides some. The economy, across the globe, is already in a worse situation than what they were in 2008.

I'm working on that. It won't be a good fit for everyone, because there are some clients who do not need to know where I live......but if I can work it out, I can at least eat and pay the utilities.

I really wish the governor had started out closing salons in counties with the larger number of cases, rather than closing them statewide.
My county only has two, and they are related and have been in quarantine since returning from a mission trip and being tested.

So sorry to hear this. A lot of banks are helping out anyone affected so perhaps contacting your mortgage company (if you have one) and any credit card companies, utilities and anyone else you regularly owe money to explaining the situation would be a possibility. They may be willing to work out a plan for you so that you don't get behind in payments and can get back on track when things eventually settle down.

Most, my university included, are talking as though this situation might be wrapped up in the near future, say in a few months time. I dont think that's even close, this will still be going on, by years end I think. My university is telling fourth year students, who would be graduating, that they've still to sit their exams, becsause, according to them: there will be jobs available to them in August and they dont want to put plans up in the air. Ridiculous. This situation has already put things in the air.

Thankfully, I had asked that my ex pay off the mortgage instead of paying child support. My house is mine, free and clear. So in that respect, I'm much more fortunate than many who are in this boat with me.

Well, that would make too much sense and our governments don't work that way.

(Applause) Preach, Dio, if you run for office I'll vote for you.
I'm like Stephen King... thanks but no thanks. I have one daughter that is a politician and another in college that plans on becoming a politician. I'll let them run the country... they'll do a far better job than I could. The daughter that is a politician is scrambling right now as her city has no disaster plan in place to deal with something like this and she's just winging it.

I had a husband and wife come into the home improvement center last evening. They both work at a hospital and were given orders they need to wear protective eyewear and masks all day at the hospital. The problem was both of them wore eyeglasses and the hospital didn’t have protective eyewear to accommodate glasses, and they had spent all evening looking for goggles that fit over glasses, or over-glasses protective eyewear. Nobody had any and we had none. Inventory said we did have 1 over-glasses protective eyewear and I found the empty package... seems someone stole it. Also, they said they are only given one mask per day to wear all day. And that one mask is useless for a 9-12 hour shift. This morning I found my over-glasses protective eyewear and will be taking it into the home improvement center this evening to give to a healthcare provider if another comes in looking for them. I can always get another pair later.
