I tend to stick to NPR for my news, so I am spared the "hype" as they focus on calmly delivering the facts. I suspect one reason this thing has spread so far is because we're in the heart of cold and flu season; it might have taken quite some time for someone to realize what was happening. On the surface the Chinese government seems to be striving to keep everyone informed which is probably the best way to combat panicky misinformation.

That said, like many others here, I started hearing "Don't Fear the Reaper" in my head when the news started circulating...

WolfgirlAwoo Thanks for that comment. I suffer major anxiety as well, particularly about infections/disease (wash my hands a lot, etc.). Your thoughts make me feel better. I obviously will continue to be careful, but will indeed try to distract myself, good advice...

For those who think of Captain Trips...I agree, that reference is appropriate here (in the sense of being King--related, not in describing accurately the situation as of yet), but I have more so thought of the short story "Gray Matter." There was a line in there about one of the characters being able to tell that the blob-creature could divide as a ways of reproducing (or maybe it was the narrator, can't recall without checking if it was first-person) and then performing the scary doubling-math. Because of some of the reported stats, "Matter" is more on my mind...
Interesting that you thought of this story. Seeing as the problem arose in it from drinking a bad beer and how many memes there are floating around the internet about Corona beer and this virus I’m surprised I didn’t think of it too. Good work!!

I absolutely agree with you on everything you have said. I also think that it it good for someone to have this panic among people now, as a kind of distraction from some political matters, maybe. Some may say I am crazy to think like that :D And flu is really more dangerous than this virus, and flu is all around us. Stay safe, I hope we won't encounter either flu or the Chinese virus!

...and then, it seems, some of us are a bit confused about the nature of the outbreak:

Corona virus? Get a twelve-pack!!!
I was under the impression the WuFlu was a zoonotic disease thought to have originated in bats that passed the disease to snakes, which then passed it to humans. Originated in “wet markets” of Wuhan (poorly regulated animal markets mixed with illegal wildlife trade) that put people and live and dead animals (dogs, chickens, pigs, snakes, civets, and more) in close contact with one another that made it easy for the virus to make an interspecies jump.

(I'm sure OoO will read that as 'wet bars' though. :))

I was always a skeptic , One should look to the activities of the government to see if there's
any shaky legislation looking to be passed that needs our attention focused on some deadly virus
remember the deadly EBOLA virus? gone ! What happened ? Maybe we need to take a STAND ! Just pick a side !3388833887

Coincidentally I had my plumber in yesterday due to a blocked toilet and he is going to order a "Caroma" toilet for us, then install it when it comes in.

Read This Before You Buy a Toilet

He says it's less likely to get plugged and I hope he is right;

Sorry if I am hijacking this thread but I guess I could tie it in by saying we are always careful to wash our hands with soap and water (knock on wood - that corona virus sounds serious!)

Glad I’m drinking domestic at the moment...:very_drunk:
Hmmmm - guess the washing of hands isn't going to make much of a difference :facepalm_smiley:

Just be careful nobody sneezes on you!

Most often, spread from person-to-person happens among close contacts (about 6 feet). Person-to-person spread is thought to occur mainly via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes, similar to how influenza and other respiratory pathogens spread. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. It’s currently unclear if a person can get 2019-nCoV by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes.

Now it appears the Canadian government is trying to evacuate Canadians from Wuhan:
