My last assignment was in Torrington (cat in a bag knows), and an hour twenty into a supposed all-day gig, the attorneys who were all on videoconference said they just got an email that the Gov shut down all in-person meetings in the state, effective immediately. Since I was with the witness, supplying him a computer for the videoconference and staying at a socially appropriate distance from one another,, that constituted an in-person meeting, and they had to obey the governor. I had driven Ice Death Highway to get there that morning, and I wasn't thrilled about going back while it was still icy. Oh, well.

I told the story to Number One Son, who said, "Since you were all videoconferencing, couldn't you have just put the witness in a different room and carried on?" Mic drop. What do you get when you have two lawyers and a court reporter? A creature that isn't as good as figuring out a legal proceeding as a FedEx driver.

That was last Friday. I had a full calendar this week, and everything canceled. Everything canceled next week except for one Friday afternoon gig that's still holding on. We're calling everyone, trying to talk them into switching it to remote rather than cancel entirely.

Meanwhile, this Age of Contagion messes with your mind.

Grandma can't seem to get warm right now and feels like she has a bad cold settling into her head. Feeling too crappy for our daily walk.
I did some things for her, told her to keep with fluids, and suggested she wrap up and finish bingeing on her favorite show of the moment. She started to but then said, no, she just feels too lousy and is going to lie down and nap. She got up, said she felt better, and went downstairs to do the binge-watch.

So now, of course, her normally rational, logical husband is freaking out.

Man, I'll be happy when this contagion thing is over.

I have several people who book ahead. I've offered them all a house visit, if they need it while we're closed. Two of my most regular clients added fifty dollars to their total today when they paid. I didn't even know it until I finished for the day......I never look at the amount money they give me. I just ask if they need change, and stick it in my pocket. Same with checks and cards, I don't look at the final amount until I'm settling the day's books. It was very humbling and made me feel good at the same time when I realized what they had done. I'm not as panicked as I was this morning. Those two kind people made me see that Others do care and want to help. My faith in people is for now, renewed.
I've decided to set the chair back up in my basement and offer some clients to come to the house......not all, just the most regular ones. I will have to explain to them that my house is old and ugly, but this will suffice until we can return to the salon. Many of them have been to the chair in my basement before. When my ex-husband forced me to give up my own salon, my faithful clients came to the basement then. They didn't care how it looked, they just cared that I was doing their hair. So for the next 30 days, I'm a renegade hair stylist......I like the sound of that. Might start answering my phone with "Hello, Renegade Salon".
Love your positive attitude. Go girl!

North Carolina's governor made an executive order yesterday closing all hair salons for a minimum of 30 days. The order takes effect at 5:00 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday). While I understand the need to be cautious, I'm not sure what I'm going to do for money. As a self employed person, I do not qualify for unemployment. Trying to look for the bright spot, but it's becoming difficult not to become depressed.
(((Sunny)))!!!!!! Start looking around for any type of agencies that can assist you with your power bill, etc. They're out there, you just have to search.

So, I did an essay on populism a while ago. One of the figures I focused on, I'm sure the Americans will know him, was Ross Perot. Perot was basically the most successful third party candidate, a Texas busisnessman and common sense politician. If he was in charge at the moment, I have no doubts that the US would be in a better position.
He lost the election because he used too many charts. People don't like charts. He did make a heck of a lot of sense with his plans and ideas though. Another reason he lost the election was he was a no-nonsense talking guy and he wasn't 'suave' enough for the (at the time) general public. Fast forward to three and a half years ago and see what happened.......

Trudeau is really stepping up to the plate on this. Talking about giving EI to folks who have to be off work for a few weeks. Talking about rent deferment and all kinds of help outs for folks who will be struggling. He is asking help from the celebrities as well.

Did anyone else hear/see the news report this morning on ABC that the virus may live for up to 19 hours on surfaces? I had the TV on and was in the kitchen when I heard them say this but by the time I got into the livingroom they had already moved past this part of the discussion.
