The only thing that has slowed this down in countries where they have had the most deaths has been closing things down. Failure to recognize and accept this is what will continue to see the infections rise exponentially. That's the stand that needs to be made. Make sacrifices for a shorter amount of time or see this take over completely. And maybe let the scientists and medical experts who actually know a thing or two be the ones to lead press conferences rather than politicians who are throwing out incorrect and/or anecdotal "evidence" and thereby continue to make public statements that are confusing and misinforming the public.

This is becoming a hot topic so let's not continue to go there or this thread will be shut down.

Well said!

In the meantime, more people need to recognize this is not a hoax or something to be taken lightly and if they voluntarily step up to do the right things to keep this from spreading, there's less likelihood they will be forced to do so. We're not at a cure yet but it's imperative to stop the spread until we have one and a vaccine that will prevent infection.

YES!!!!

"A simple plan executed now is better than something long term and half-assed."
General Patton.
The US should complete shutdown now, just until the pandemic stage of this is over, then, after this is done, deal with the economic consequence. Money should NEVER be put ahead of lives.

New Zealand
New Zealand went into complete lock-down at midnight tonight. Only essential service workers are to be out and about in the community from the morning onward for a minimum of 4 weeks. One nominated person per household will be shopping. (numbers greatly reduced inside supermarkets) All doctor/or nurse consults are to be via phone or video-link, if they're required to be seen at a clinic--they have to have had the virtual consult first. All essential services are still running.
Police and army will be moving people on if they're not following the lock-down protocols out in communities.
We have a real chance of minimising the losses if we do this right.
