I'm interested in searching for his humorous stories, now. Thanks Spidey for info. Maybe he had a Twain-streak in his later writing.

If someone wants to volunteer for next week's story, that'd be great. I can nominate someone but I don't want to name a person who recently did it. Joe, do you want to have another go? Morgan? Bueller? Anyone? ;)

Speaking of Cody...where the heck is he?

I don't know what happened. A few months back, Cody sent me a PM and told me he wasn't going to be able to do the discussions and asked me to do it. I didn't realize he was going to be gone this long. I don't know what caused the disappearance. I don't think he's posted in any other threads since then.

Last Cody was seen was end of May. Hope he is doing OK. Anyone heard from him?

Does everyone have a Poe collection?

I would like to pick Hop-Frog for next week if everyone has a copy. There are a couple of editions of Poe's complete works on Amazon for .99.
Yes. Great, this is one I haven't read.
Morgan is sending me a copy of 20th Century Ghosts which I've never read. (Thank you, morgan!) It should be here Monday. If you need someone to do the week after the Poe story, I could. If everyone has this Joe Hill book I was thinking of choosing a story from it.
Maybe we can choose a King novella in the future and give people an extra week or two to read it. I can't believe The Stand book group will begin in less than a month.
Just some ideas. Thanks.

Great little story! Such vivid details, I could smell that muggy swamp.

Absolutely racism first and foremost, but not only that, a differentism was in play.

Anything about someone that sets them apart as different, anything not towing-the-line of a person's idea of "normal" is suspect and fair game for scorn, ridicule and mistreatment.

It happens every day. We expect people to conform and fit the mold and when they don't -- looks, actions, thoughts -- there are some that find that threatening, a personal affront, and they must act.

The big cats got the Baxters: I give this passage to you as proof.

"They said that a cry which had been heard just before dusk and just after, skittering across the darkened waters, was his calling cry to the big cats, and at his bidding they came trooping in, and that in their company he swam in the lake on moonlight nights, sporting with them, diving with them, even feeding with them on what manner of unclean things they fed. The cry had been heard many times, that much was certain, and it was certain also that the big fish were noticeably thick at the mouth of Fishhead’s slough."

Before Fishhead fell into the swamp, he sent out his cry, and he brought those cats in for feeding.

"They call them man-eaters and compare them, in certain of their habits, to sharks."

The only real group that accepted Fishead for his true nature heard that cry and they came on instinct and did what Cats have always done, they fed.

Hop-Frog is a good one that many haven't read before. I read it way back in an anthology (the anthology The Crate was published in back in the 80s). A bit of Hop-Frog was in one of the Vincent Price/Roger Corman Poe movies. I forget which movie it was but Roger Corman said the story they adapted was too short for a regular length movie so they combined Hop-Frog into the movie.

I have a couple books of collected Poe stories. If I can get Hop-Frog read before the moving process starts next week, maybe I can join in the discussion.

My books are all over the place, so thank you for the link Spideyman ! :love_heart:
