Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood

Okay. This had me feeling sad, nostalgic, angry, voyeuristic, entertained -- and a smile escaped too. I recommend this one, currently on Starz (I think it was). If anything, just the historical footage of life back then, of WWII, Hollywood stars and the system, the reminisces of a time that was good, but was very very bad too. The racism, sexism, bigotry, homophobia -- just appalling.

Scotty Bowers openly discusses his days as the pimp to Hollywood stars. He calls himself that, and happy to do so.

He took great pride in being able to provide a service, discreetly, and not a pimp in the traditional sense. He just made the connections, he didn't take one dime from anyone who he set up with someone else. When he said he would do something, or be there, he delivered come hell or high water. His word means everything to him, so even pimps can have a code of ethics. I'm surprised he is spilling the secrets now when he was very well known in Hollywood circles as the guy to trust and keep the secrets.

He discusses being a hustler from a young age, around 11! He talks about a teacher who was a "dyke" and he set her up with one of his 11 year old female classmates. He talks about being passed around by priests and they giving him quarters and dimes from the collection plate.

And here's the kicker. He was very happy to be this sexual. He is offended if you say he was a defenseless child who was molested and traumatized and taken advantage of. His views on this aspect of his life are so interesting and tragic.

If you get the chance, catch this one. He has written a book and I'm going to read it.

I sat there thinking that those parents have got to be the dumbest people on the face of the earth.
.....part of his therapy?.....really?
I think there is a lot more to the story. No one can be that naive.
Agreed. I almost started thinking it was one of those fake documentaries because I can't fathom parents being that naive and gullible when it comes to their own child. Interesting but just really out in left field overall.

Okay, I am 44 minutes into this doc and I totally believe they can be this gullible. And there's a reason. I cannot state my reasons here as they are hot topics and harsh. They are based on what I KNOW, not what I think, or believe or speculate.

Some time ago I watched a remarkable documentary: The Conscientious Objector. It was about Desmond Doss, a pacifist and army medic who refused to carry a rifle and became the only conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor for single handily saving 75 men in the Battle of Okinawa during WWII. Over the weekend I watched the movie Hacksaw Ridge (2016) directed by Mel Gibson. The movie is about Doss, his life and heroics. A powerful movie and I understand Gibson didn’t want to show even more true heroics by Doss when they went back up into battle as be didn’t think the audience would believe so much more that Doss had done that day. I’ll have to try and find the documentary again to watch it.

Oasis: Supersonic

I think these two brothers just couldn't get past the sh*t that happened to them as kids. I think their household was every man for himself and throw the one next to you in the line of fire.

So sad, really. One is the writer, one is the singer. They really do go together like a stick of dynamite with a short fuse and a flaming BIC.

And the constant dog fight continues:

Watched Whitney (2018) a few nights ago. Absolutely tragic. I have mixed feelings about the interviews with family and friends, but the archived footage of her rise to fame and talent was heart wrenching.

Running For His Life: Lawrence Phillips

Another interesting documentary on a football star. And just touching on a previous discussion, another player that might have suffered with CTE. Lawrence's brain was tested, but the family did not reveal the answer. So, that makes me think he didn't have it because as a family, I would think they would want to grab anything and tell everyone if something external caused all his violence. Something to blame other than the guy taking responsibility for his behavior.

Not saying I don't believe CTE changes a brain and a person, it does in very catastrophic ways. But if your character is a thug or unstable person , I think it can escalate those character traits. Intensify something already there.

Either way, it's a sad story. A guy who overcame some struggles to be the top dog in college football and I guess in the NFL. Who was given chance after chance. Who had some very powerful people behind him wanting him to succeed. And he threw it all away.

What Makes a Psychopath?

Fascinating.

Once in a Lifetime with Noel Gallagher

After the Oasis Supersonic Documentary, I followed up with this. Interesting fellow. Talented. And to me, there is a lot of sad under the surface.

Tidying Up with Marie Kondo

I am on a mission now since watching her.

People. Just live and let live. How does it personally affect you if a man feels like a woman or a woman feels like a man?

This was incredibly sad to watch. Born male, a guy who all his life identified as female, but became this uber macho guy to try to fight it. Tried to be what everyone saw him to be.

His high school photos -- Oh my god, gorgeous boy. But he looked in the mirror and saw something else.

In your heart and your mind, just silently wish people the best and move on with your own struggles. You deal with you first before you shame someone else. Let them make their break for the wall.

Mad props Janae Marie Kroczaleski!
