My mother remembered the War of the Worlds when it was originally broadcast on the radio and she said no one she knew including herself thought it was for real.
Have talked to a couple of people who heard broadcast.
They said the same thing.

Was it true that there were some suicides during or after the broadcast due to the content or is that just an urban legend? Always heard there were but wasn't sure.

I think Amos 'n' Andy was banned from tv because someone thought the characters were stereotyped... like tv isn't full of stereotypes. I just thought the show was funny
Oh yes! The classic 32 episodes are the best of the lot though. Basically 4 people in one room and I can watch them over and over again without getting bored. Amazing.
....indeed it was, apparently because it was so blatantly racist instead of racism masquerading in other clothes as occurs nowadays.....You got it!
According to all the things I can find on the interweb the "mass" hysteria reported was what we today have given the moniker of fake news. It appears the newspaper print media was in a war with the relatively new radio airwaves. The next day papers ran with the stories of people in the streets, mass hysteria and suicides. According to one article I read there has not been one documented death in relation to the broadcast.
In other news Bigfoot was over to the house for supper last night and Trump "is not under investigation".
GNTLGNT I like practically everything you post. Most of the time it is like we are "brothers from another mother". Weird senses of humor but underneath I think hopefully we both are decent people who try to basically live by that Golden Rule thingy.
I realize that racism exists, always has always will, in many blatant and subtle ways.
I grew up in a very rural community on a farm where we hired workers from area, the majority of them African Americans. Most of those were my age or a little older. Many are still close friends and visited me for hours on my recent hospital/home recovery/vacation. My father's funeral was in a small Baptist church and people were standing room only with overflow in the yard. Most diversity that the church has ever seen.
Laying all this out for background, which a middle aged white southerner often has to do, I feel like Amos n Andy gets a bad rap sometimes. The radio show, yeah maybe, because it was voiced by white actors. The TV show really showed many black people in a favorable light as business owners, parents and good members of a solid community. The "comedy" part of show was very similar to The Honeymooners in the scheming and some characters being portrayed as less than intelligent. That has been a comedic staple of shows since Shakespeare (man his stuff is hard to read, couldn't he write in English?).
OK not sure where this short story came from but basically wanted to say I don't believe that the show is more racist in its portrayal of African Americans than say a more modern Soul Plane or the Friday movie franchise. Friday I like other one not so much.
.....yeah you're right old buddy-us weirdoes tend to flock together....and I see your point, the radio show WAS much more stereotyped and the use of white voice actors was reprehensible, but perfectly accepted at the time....the TV episodes, were on a much better plane-but it still portrayed the star as a conniving "make a fast buck" type which to me, still smells of racism-it IS though the first TV show to feature an all black cast, and for that I applaud it....I've told this story elsewhere, but as a child my Mom's parents employed a black housekeeper and she was very much a part of our family.....I was innocent to the turmoil of the Civil Rights movement and didn't learn "hatred" of another skin color until I was older-and though I can see not liking someone, the color of their skin shouldn't play a role in it-nor their creed, religion or orientation.....I say this now with the "wisdom" of my age, but will never say I didn't have my ignorant moments as a younger man.....
I saw an episode of Mysteries at the Museum that was about this. Except for a very few people, no one thought the the show was real and there was no "Martian Panic." However, some newspaper (who were trying to sell copy) reported that there was a huge panic and other papers and radio news picked up that story and ran with it. To this day a lot of people believe the Martian Panic was real when it was just a 30s example of fake news.
I saw just this this publicity pic & thought, omg, I miss Bill Bixby! And this was one of the only Hulk threads that came up on the search. So here you go! So much time has passed, and really he's still the best Bruce (David) Banner. Bixby was what they used to call a 'Journeyman Actor'. He was always good. He was always Bill Bixby! In the day, comics fans felt he was too old and had too much baggage when 'Hulk' debuted. By baggage I mean, he probably did 700 TV movies! I think his age gave him a 'haunted' quality he hadn't had previously. Before this, he was the stereotypical "light leading man". With a bend toward comedy. And to add to his superhero resume, he dated Yvonne Craig (Batgirl) for several years -- not many guys could say that! Child/Adult star Jason Bateman could be his illegitimate son.
Hah! When you mentioned the trivial pursuit game it reminded me of Eddie's brother answering "Johnny Cash" all the time.
