Welp, I got my music going and a cold drink...let's do this! ;)

Good evening, everyone. I will try to not get too high brow. This time is designated for discussing Book One but we can talk about any part you like. All comments are welcome. So, which version is everyone reading?

...I have read both novels, but have to admit that the version that is “complete” is my preference...

Yeah, mine too. There is obviously a quicker pacing in the edited version which appeared in 1978 but I loved all the extra information...well, except for the scene where Lloyd's lawyer yaps on and on about the death penalty and pitfalls of the legal system, LOL.

I'm reading the uncut version. The first part always gives me the heebie jeebies and makes me feel like I'm getting sick. Every darn time. This one is one of my top favorites. Funny though, I have an uncut version and could never get into it at all. So my first experience with this story was the uncut version and I couldn't believe I thought the story was bad before, because it sucked me right in and quickly became a favorite.

Hey, Cat! Yeah, the descriptions of how a victim dies with Captain Tripp's was horrible...horribly great. ;)
I felt so bad for Frannie and Larry as they helplessly watched their respective parent die.

Something new occurred to me this time. The only flaw (I hesitate to call it that) was how many of the characters start mourning the world and they are only just beginning to see the effects. Book One only covers the first few months (summer 1980, for those reading the original version). Thoughts?

Yes, that's what I'm reading. I plan to pick up reading Book Two this week. Anything stand out to you that you'd never noticed?
Not so much stand out, but rather the implications of scientific experimentation that continues today. The fact another The Stand could be on the horizon, and with modern society would the results still be the same.

Yes! Not a lot of things more terrifying than those itty bitty germs that can cause havoc. You cannot avoid them, you cannot prevent it. Scary stuff for sure.

And you know there are things like this out there. That just makes it 100 times worse.

I read the uncut version for this discussion. I really wanted to get a copy of both to compare, as my original edited paperback was worn to taters and gone to the great library in the sky, but wasn't able to find one. Still on the hunt, maybe for book 2 discussion.

Uncut has been my favorite since I first found it. cat in a bag - I used to read it every summer and almost always would start to feel a cold coming on. Yikes!!

The descriptions are so vivid, each detail, as Spideyman mentioned, just begs to be savored.

Did you find yourself relating to, or drawn to, different characters this time? I have been interested in Lloyd's story and Larry's journey...man, Larry can't catch a break, can he? Haha.

Lloyd, definitely! I also found myself very interested in Nick and Tom. For some reason I really, really dislike Frannie. Am I the only one?
