Could a factor be that Steve was writing this book during a period of the Cold War-- a time when people lived in a degree of fear of immediate annihilation? Thus his characters where to a degree already preparing for "loss". Being Steve draws the constant readers deeply into his characters , their emotions about their future were more dire than one might expect today.

A really nice interpretation! Scholars have connected the use of outbreak narratives with Cold War Fears.

Yeah, it't interesting how Stu and Frannie's father are mirrors.

Also, for those that read the original novel, how different is Frannie's mom? I know SK says something about using the uncut version to fully unpack Frannie's relationship with her mother.
That was why I was looking for an original to compare. I feel like she was mentioned but we barely met her. No parlor scene, for sure!

How do you think the death of Rita Blakemoor altered Larry's path. I think he started to grow up then, and he realized how drugs could kill (even though it's implied she committed suicide). I don't think it is an accident that she is much older than he is and is a reminder of the mother he just lost. I don't know...anyone else think this sobered up Larry from his self-destructive path?

I do think that this incident changed Larry. He is a malleable character; a gut with a good heart and self destructive tendencies.

I agree. There's also the whole birthing symbolism (Larry is in his birthday suit and 'emerges' from the tent, leaving it up and Rita unhurried).

Definitely - one of those life changing moments.

Yeah, Frannie will ultimately write things in her journal for her baby but even then it feels premature. It takes time for a loss to be noticed and to cause grief. It's a minor thing, though. King had to address these things for the emotional impact and to help bond us to what the character's are losing.
I think some of this is due to the time it was written. No social media or instant news sources...if your local news source is down, what else do you do but mourn?? No where else to get news.
