There was a hit and run very close to where I live and a lady that was walking got seriously injured. So close, in fact, that where this lady got hit is where I frequently walk my dog. This is the 4th hit and run within a week in approximately a 25 mile radius from my house. Three people have died in these four incidents. Luckily, in the incident by my house, there were a couple of witnesses and a good description of the vehicle was given so the chances are that this one will be caught.

The past few years, it seems that I am hearing about hit and runs in my area with alarming frequency. Are the rest of you noticing this in your parts of the country or is this just around me? We have had several incidents the past few years where kids have got hit walking to a bus stop in the morning. What the hell is going on? I don't remember ever hearing about hit and runs at the rate they are happening now in my area.

Being more rural, not as much in my area. However, just a few miles into a more populated area and yes, too many hit and runs. Especially children going to or from school. Do we need to put neon clothing on them?
It is getting more common for "some" drivers to just feel they own the road and everything in their path needs to move or get run down. Am sure cell phones/ texting while driving/ drinking that hot cup of coffee distracts many of the drivers. No excuses.

I hear about it on the odd occasion around here, but nothing like you're experiencing. Do they think it could be the same person doing this? Or group? Does it just involve just pedestrians or are vehicles being hit as well?

I'm talking about all kinds of accidents, not just pedestrians. Not all are as serious as the 4 this week either but it just seems that I am hearing about so many hit and runs that it's hard to understand.

Distracted driving is one thing but the fleeing the scene is another all together. I can't understand how you could leave someone injured on the road like that.

Unless, God forbid, it was done on purpose. With this many happening in such a short time it is a concern. I never in my life would have believed that some could find it fun to go out and punch a total stranger in the face for kicks. Yet this "knockout game" seems to be happening with more frequency as well. I'm hoping that this is just a nasty coincidence and isn't following some kind of pattern.

Can't even walk the dog without one eye tied behind your back.

Absolutely! In a city close to me, pedestrian and bicycle hits have been huge this last year. Some hit and run, some caught. People have died. And why I'm aware of this is my oldest son does not drive (for environmental reasons. He's saving the planet, one bus ride at a time). These hits have been in the area where he walks and bikes. It scares the crap out of me. Every single time I hear about one, I am texting him like a fiend over and over and over until he answers me.

I think Spidey hit it on the head--distractions in the car. I've seen people watching TV while driving! It's crazy. Then when you couple that with a general not giving two rabbit pellets for anyone else...

I read about this sort of things in our local newspaper often. When a car have hit someone and young people who's
driving like crazy with their scooter or mopeds and being hit by a car. This is a small town I live in, so is not happen very often, but
it happens. In our neighbor town which is 30 min drive from my town. They live dangerous. Drivers don't have any respect for walkers, if
they see that someone is walking and cross the road drivers barely stop they just slow down so much that they not have to stop. There's been
so much accidents between people who's crossing roads and drivers who's hit them. Thankful that no one has died yet. Cause they drive like crazy and has
no respect for people around them.

Fljoe, Yes, it is happening in my area, much too often. Recently there was a female Marine killed in a hit and run.( while home visiting her family.) They announced yesterday that they had arrested the driver. She was to appear in court today. I hope this lady serves some serious time. I don't understand how someone could hit someone and just drive away?? Where's their conscience?

We have huge problem with this in LA. It's on the news all of the time. It's become an epidemic and they don't know what to do about it. A man was killed about two weeks ago by my house and I don't think they ever caught the person.
The same in NYC. I just know it has to do with damn texting and talking on the freaking phone. People suck! Yes, I am passionate about the use of phones in cars. They should be banned altogether!

DWI is often the culprit in NYC as well. That is just stupid behavior and should carry a much stiffer penalty than it currently does.

Forgot earlier to say that it sometimes amazes me when I see people that has pull of the road to talk in the cellphone, they are those
people whom I raise my hat. Yes very often I see people driving and talking in the cell at the same time so it's a issue here too.
To confess, I am actually in the same group of people who's talking and driving at the same time. :shame:
