I did enjoy this one. In small town, USA, there is often that "take care of the women folk" and Maddie was a good example of one of the one's who is ok with that. That she found her strength, during a Zombie apocolypse was just too cool in my opinion!
Not gonna lie-in the case of a zombie apocalypse, I'd gladly step back and let the men folk take over! ;-D

I think it had a lot to do with the maternal instinct to protect her unborn child.

See. There's the strength part kickin' in! You never know what you are going to do until the moment.

I just enjoyed how she went from standing in the store worrying over soup cans to deciding to buy the whole supply. Then deciding that she would survive the whole dang invasion! LOL

I'd like to think that, too-unfortunately I know myself better! :(
But that is good, to know yourself. You would be helping to gather seniors or assisting with the infirm or children, perhaps getting a meal together to feed workers; Sweet pea, that isn't bad. That is very needed when society crumbles. If I wouldn't be out kicking some zombie butt, that is where I would be :)

Great Point! Maddie really grew during this story. She gained confidence in her decisions and in her opinions.

Is this the right place?
I guess.

This reminded me of 'The Metamorphosis' by Franz Kafka. In that one the guy wakes up a bug and everyone has to adjust but it's the same principle. Maddie had to step up. She had to find strength within her. She had to fill a role that had been left to someone else. Survival forces one to step out of the comfortable when nothing else will. In Kafka's story I always figured the bug symbolized a plunge into drunkeness. In this one it isn't a person that changes but the world so the symbolism could mean sudden war or other life changing things. It forced her to think of what she had to do for her offspring.

That she so far hadn't discussed the delivery and gotten some makeshift midwife was a bit troubling. You can trust your own strength too much. Also, she did seem to be lining up the next provider a bit though that was understandable given the circumstances. Women are stronger than men in some ways.

The ball of space snakes was just jarringly freaky.

I did love SK's set up of Maddie's character-I could really "see" her struggling to make decisions. But when push came to shove, she totally had it in her-GO GIRL!! ;-D

:biglove:Welcome Scratch. Interesting view on Kafka's Metamorphosis. I had thought of it as a man who had a stroke and could do less and less for himself, including talking and bathing etc.
I agree with your concern over her not telling another woman or trying to find a mid-wife. I am not so sure she was trying to line up another 'provider' as she was really just proud of them for stepping outside of their comfortable reality and fighting off the zombies to make life safe for the future.
