Fun weekend. Took me almost 3 hours to get home Friday during the storm, and had to plow through over a foot of snow the snow plows had created at the entrance to our driveway. Snow drifts, downed trees and power lines made driving treacherous. Many cars slid off the road and were abandoned in farm fields. Hoped to get home with an hour of daylight to get the generator going because I knew with my luck I’d have trouble. Didn’t work out as planned. My father-in-law was at our house as we’re having two bathrooms tiled. He called the wife about 11am and said he was heading home because it was the end of the world at our place on the mountain. Wife left work about noon and got home about 12:30 just in time to the power to go out. The tile crew were thankful for the power outage so they could get the hell out of Dodge, also. Of course when I finally got home I couldn’t get the generator working and couldn’t work on it in the dark with 60mph winds. Thankfully we had the fireplace to heat the main level of the house. Let me tell you.. The 19th century sucks! 6:30 am Saturday I head out in the daylight to work on the generator. Had to drain the gas, get the bad gas out of the motor and replace the spark plug, which meant I had to disconnect the fuel tank to get to it. Took about an hour but fired it up and hooked it up to the breaker box, which meant I could selectively get power to several areas in the house. Generator was not powerful enough to run the heat pump or the hot water heater, but most everything else had power. Most important was the well pump, the water pump to force water up through the house, some lights and the power to refrigerators. Went out and took stock of the damage. We lost a 30 foot tree that was ripped out by the roots. We also lost a vertical support and railing for the entrance to the house (Still don’t know if there is any structural damage), and some gutters were bent up. The roof looks okay for the most part, but there appears to be some damage to a part of it over the garage. Got back power late Saturday because we are tied into the same grid as the elementary school down the road and because of the school our area is a priority as they can’t let the water pipes freeze. Some people in our area won’t get power back until Wednesday... Just in time for another nor’easter to hit that is forecast to dump another foot of snow on us. But some good news... the mailbox is still standing. :rolleyes:
At least you don't have to replace the mailbox........
Seriously though, glad y'all are all okay, and that the tree didn't do a lot of damage.

Thanks. The tree was located at the bottom of the property so no damage. But it is sitting at about a 30 degree angle hung up on another pine. So that will make cutting it up with the chainsaw problematic. But the wife is glad it came down. She’s been after me for two years to take it out because she doesn’t like it.

Sure! :p And if you do yourself in there is already a big hole from where the roots were pulled out... to stick you in. Nobody will ever find you. I'll even plant daisies on top. :D j/k. Seriously though... It’s actually kind of a dangerous process and I wouldn’t want anyone but myself or a professional to tackle it.

LOL. I’ve felled trees hung up like this in the past. It’s a pain. You have to cut a ‘V’ in the top. Then cut straight down enough to get a wedge in from the side. Then make a cut from the bottom up at least six inches. Pound the wedge until the tree starts to break... And run when you hear it start breaking. You keep repeating the process until the tree comes down. I can't find my wedge... haven't used it in over 25 years. Will pick one up tonight.

Sorry to hear about all the trouble caused by the weather - good thing you live not too far from a school (so you can get power back sooner!)

I'm guessing you'd prefer a sand wedge?

I wonder how many are unable to post due to the bad weather? Today I have an appointment downtown so I have to get cracking on some paperwork that needs to be filled out.

Snowplows on parade

Hopefully most of the streets will be cleaned up soon, once those who had to drive to work are parked and out of the way!

Yikes, you shut the service feed to that panel? Good luck, it ain't pretty where we are at the moment!

Yeah, I ended up pulling the main fuses until the water stopped coming in. I boarded my Mom’s pets and had her stay at my condo. Which had no power :( Came back on Saturday morning. She also had a couple broken outdoor light fixtures. Replaced those. Now just need to get some estimates from a few electricians to have the line into the house replaced and the service panel swapped from fuses to breakers. Minor stuff compared to the poor folks with houses right on the water.

Man that was awful out there - I had to go downtown. When I went to get my parked vehicle this gigantic black monster truck flew by, way over the speed limit. He got me pretty good - the slush went down the neck of my parka, in my ear, all over the freaking place!

:dispirited::m_scream::m_grr:

This was my reaction at first, but then I had to smile (I was imagining the people in the tall buildings looking out the window and laughing) :m_snicker:

The good news is that I finally got my paperwork in order and that is a big relief - now I just wait for the money to show up in my bank account.

The guy who helped me was a real sweetheart - he lives outside of town but came into work anyway - I thanked him for being so diligent.

:redhat::slap:

Some people were also in a big hurry today even though it was so slushy - I had one dinky car come up behind me, let out a little "meep" as if he expected me to get out of the way [this on a three lane road and I was on the right!] :no_pig:
