A similar scenario happened to me a few weeks back...I complained to management before leaving the cinema and received two complimentary tickets for myself, and for three other couples who also had their movie experience ruined. It is easy to ask why I/we didn't complain during the movie but as I informed the manager, I should not have to leave the movie to complain when there are plenty of staff on duty and it should be part of their role to monitor what is happening inside of the theatres, and reprimand/remove those who are being disruptive.
Right on, that's what I'm getting at. Maybe theater owners will decide they don't like hearing complaints and having to give away tickets, and start monitoring what's going on after the movie starts. The solution is simple.

Danie, Why not call the manager tomorrow morning and let him or her know what happened? Worst that can happen is they say 'so what'? Who knows, maybe a bunch of workers were goofing off...perhaps they will give 2 tickets to future performance..
And if the manager seems not to care just tell him/her that you have no other choice than to check out other theaters instead of theirs. Then you can ask for the manager's supervisor's name and number.

Well, it's not the worst thing in the world, but it is annoying!
We just don't go to the movies (as often as I would like), and when I go, I would like to enjoy it instead of cringing through the whole thing.
I was serious about it - I absolutely HATE it when that happens - maybe I am a movie-o-phile (or whatever it is called) but just like a book, I want to "lose myself" in the movie which is also why I don't like it when people come in late and disrupt the experience for me. I know - I am a weird one!

Is it perhaps relative to a local culture?

Honestly, in this jewel of an area, and I don't say that ironically, all the SHUT YOUR STINKIN' CELLPHONES OFF messages come through before the movie starts. And while I've been annoyed with conversation, seat bumps, and so on around me, I can't think of the last time I was distracted by someone around me talking or texting on their phone. Maybe my town is just more polite. Maybe I've been lucky. I dunno.

But I'm pretty sure that it doesn't get addressed without social consciousness being raised. Whatever, we can do - letting management know, writing a letter to the editor, even posting here, so that it has its own little impact on the collective mentality - is a good thing, I believe, toward forging better behavior.

Not weird at all. In order to engage our willing suspension of disbelief, we have to be able to focus on what's going on. It's not like a book that we can just put down and pick up again.

You are so smart, Vulture! I knew posting my rant here was a good idea! Thanks to you and blunthead too for the great advice.

Do they think they're in their living rooms at home, and other people can't hear them? Do they think other patrons like hearing their comments and noises?

I do think that is the cornerstone of the issue. Remember when a movie was an 'event'? Even if it was a movie on TV, most movies showed up at most once a year. People didn't want to miss anything! When movies in the home became the norm, that 'specialness' evaporated. Movies are an everyday event, and you can stop them, rewind them, watch them over and over if you want. Not special anymore.

Couple that with the 'Cult of Me' (lol), and public experiences of just about anything aren't always pleasant.

I hope you get to see it again, Dani, and in peace this time :)

...aw geez D-girl!...I have absolutely nothing productive to add to the civilized suggestions already articulated...and firearms and knives are not unheard of "answers" to complaints in this enlightened age in which we live(or die)...STILL, given my pleasant public persona and bullet/knifeproof mindset, I would have loudly told each and every DNA strand deficient dumb-azz, that the best part of them ended up in the Kleenex under the bed...

I think they do, I think they think they're as entertaining as the robots on Mystery Science Theater 3000. I always want to tell them they are NOT Tom Servo and to shut the f up. I might be a bit meaner than you are lol.

And WHY do people speak so loudly on cell phones???

You are hilarious (G-man)! When we moved the first time, my husband said LOUDLY to our son, "C'mon, Son, we're gonna have to move because this guy behind us won't shut up." He made sure he heard it. I like to think that, unless the talker was some sort of psychopath, he at least thought about what happened, and will maybe shut up the next time.

I love love Mystery Science Theater! And I think you're right--they do think they're being witty and cute.
This is my favorite line from MST: "And if your hands were metal, that would mean something."

The woods are lovely dark and deep
I went to the movies today to see Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
We sat down in the second row from the front (like to be close to the action.) A few minutes into the movie, the guy behind us started making comments about what was happening on the screen.
"Uh,oh!" "That had to hurt!" "Look at that!" etc.
We looked back a couple of times, but to no avail. So we got up and moved: bad decision.
The lady and her husband next to me kept "whispering," and he kept telling her what was happening or what he believed would happen next.
The couple behind us had a three- or four-year-old who (like any young child) talked through the whole movie. "Is that Captain America?" "Is it over?" (That one possibly 100 times.) "When can we go?" Plus, she obviously was very sick judging from the deep, congested cough we heard every minute or so. I know it wasn't her fault. I just wanted to turn around and hand them a twenty-dollar bill and say, "Next time, just get a babysitter. Please."
My whole movie experience was ruined. I couldn't focus on the story due to all the noise around us. I just don't get it. Do they think they're in their living rooms at home, and other people can't hear them? Do they think other patrons like hearing their comments and noises? I understand I can't have complete quiet, but c'mon.
Also, I know I could've gotten up to get an usher, but then I'd have had to miss more of the movie. Plus, you never know how people will react...
Anyway, thanks for listening. I plan to see the movie again when there will be fewer people in the theater.

AND you probably paid an arm and a leg for those tickets, didn't you? I'm of the mind that waiting until the DVD comes out is the better way.

Yes, I did! Plus the popcorn, drink & Reese's Pieces my son wanted!
If I didn't love the big screen so much, I'd wait for the DVD too. There are just some movies that are better when it's on that huge screen with the Dolby sound and all. Of course, if everyone around you is being rude, then it doesn't matter much.

Danie. I am so sorry that you didn't have a good time at the movies. We have unfortunately become a self centered society, a rude one at that! Ghost, I am glad that I am not the only one who does not see the whole point of Facebook......my kids think I am so out of touch!
I just don't get why people want to "share" everything with the world. But I'm such a private person, so that's probably why I would never do Facebook. Even the people who know me well, don't really know me...
