Never ever skim with sK.
... well when he's going into detail in the gory scenes, I think I get the gist.... I don't think the way someone's eye is hanging out of their socket is a detail that I will need to know later on in the story .....

I see this is an old thread that got revived, but I actually liked this book so not sure which fans said it wasn't good - maybe it was initially greeted with semi-bad reviews?I absolutely loved the book Cell. There are people who say that it wasn't King's best work, or that it lacked some of that good old Stephen King Magic. There is no way that King lacks his personal magic in any of his books and I thought this book was great! I don't know if some of you don't like zombie stories or what the issue is but I thought this book was a great read. Also, the book was sad at times, however, it is not like the whole book was sad. I think that every one should do a re-read on this book, and that they should make sure to make it through. I do think that King writes to suit many different palates and tastes, and this is what makes him the writer that he is (awesome). I was just shocked to read that so many King fans disliked this book!
I'm an almost lifetime fan (I started reading Mr. King when I was about 13 ), and I love Cell. It's a jumpback to the beginning for him, when his stories were lean and fast moving. Not to say that I don't like the longer books, but it was nice to have a string of them broken up by a story that hurled you along.
Yep yep, though Bachman tended more toward 'humans are massive d**cks' stories than toward 'horror' stories.Just noticing this old post skimom2, I suddenly see your point! It's sort of a Bachman book. Like 'Running Man' or 'Thinner' it grabs an idea & narrative and just runs with it, literary trappings be damned. It's a page turner. Bachman had to put beans on the table. Maybe SK should have brought Dick Bachman out of retirement for this one.

Have to agree with you there. That said I kind of like the ambigous ending. There was no way a happy ending was going to feel right, or a totally bad one. Kind of the way The Stand. Let them get on with it and we'll see what happens.I think you're all crazy!!!! Isn't that what the phone-ites said? I liked it better on the second reading. But not a lot better. The first half was great.
I enjoyed Cell tooI really loved this book too and this was actually my first King novel ever. I never even planned to read the whole thing too I just was looking through while waiting for other books and then it got me hooked and this would be my favorite King novel now, even if its b/c its my first.
