...fair or not doesn't matter to me in this case...it was the tone that set me off...don't come into new territory without at least a modicum of respect for the host....YOU handle yourself politely when you dissent....and I mean that with respect, you don't troll....

First of all, I do think he could have refused to allow. Maybe I'm wrong. But doesn't matter because....it's his work and his choice.

But, I'm not sure I 100% agree it wouldn't take anything away from the books. If I were to watch the movie, it could be bad enough that it would affect my enjoyment of rereading the books. Clan of the Cave Bear did that. It was many years before I could reread it.

Then do as I plan on doing; don't go see it until you have heard enough to know it is safe (and not a waste of your money). Movies are entirely self-inflicted wounds. We live in a day and age information and movie studios can't keep secrets even if they wanted to do so. Rotten Tomatoes will have told us if this thing is any good by giving us a average review of both the critics and audience. I've found that average to be fairly accurate on the whole. More to the point, you have this wonderful place provided for us to talk about all things King (and everything else too). I have no doubt there will be more than enough fans of the books going to tell us the skinny. All that aside, think about Star Wars and how dreadful those pre-equals were. I just deleted them from my mind. They don't exist. Easy as that. The same can be done for any movie adaptation.

I'm still waiting for a LOST/ Star Wars crossover movie ....... J.J. Abrams directing and Damon Lindelof screenplay-ing, of course ......

Look on the bright side If BBC had been involved with the movie, a female could have been cast as Roland (is thinking Doctor Who). Apart from the skin color, Idris looks quite a bit how I imagined Roland to look.

Actually, after thinking about it, a female Roland might be interesting lol.

I think it's an interesting choice for Elba to play Roland. I like him, so I certainly don't have a problem with it. I probably have a bigger issue with the Man In Black casting. I like Matthew Mcconaughey, but he just doesn't seem right to me for that role. I hope I'm wrong - I often am. I didn't think Tom Cruise could do Interview with a Vampire either and that turned out just fine.

I have to admit that I've never been excited about a DT adaptation period, although the trailer looks better to me than expected. I like to be reasonably open-minded.

after the whole heath ledger kerfuffle regarding his casting as the joker, i try to just wait it out and see what will happen. until you see a whole movie, casting is hard to really rate. and some of the most unlikely casting has led to some really good performances.

Totally agree. Great performances are often unexpected and casting can be a touchy thing. Except for Shelly Duvall in the Popeye movie - she was born for that role.

I'm so happy to hear this! I cannot wait until Friday night. I'm definitely going to see it.

I haven't read the entire thread, but I wanted to say that I absolutely love that SK allows movies to be made of his work. It's very interesting to see how others visualize the characters and settings and such. Even if he disagrees with the interpretation, allowing it to unfold is precious. Some I've liked, some I can't be bothered to watch - but at least they are out there. I'll report back after I've seen it. I wish we could all go see it together, have drinks after.
