It was a blessing being so naive.
I was 17 going on 18 , just about to finish high school and brother, was I ever in love. Not that I had any experience with girls, and as silly as it sounds, I had never even kissed a girl yet. Well, I did, once, on the cheek, and I thought I was going to faint.
Being shy as you can only imagine, I couldn`t tell her, even though it was written all over my face, my whole being, so the next best thing was to become friends with her best girlfriend.
At least I sometimes had the chance to say "hi" to this girl of my dreams when those two were together and I was there, too, naturally "by coincidence."
Her friend knew of course, I told her but she told me that "my love" was in love with some other guy. Yeah, yeah, corny, but it broke my heart.
What I didn`t know was that the friend was in love with me. I liked her, a lot, but as a friend, my heart belonged to the other.
So this one afternoon, we were just hanging around the school, talking, laughing, having a really good time and she kissed me on the cheek a few times. I thought nothing of it, we were just friends.
Or so I thought.
We sat on the school steps, still laughing, just being silly and then she asked me : " Would you go with me? "
Naive, stupid, not thinking straight... call it what you want, but I looked at her, like a kid, and said "Where?"
I will never forget the look on her face, the way she looked at me. With pure, clean love, her cheeks flushed so hard that they were almost purple.
Then she smiled, a really, really sweet smile, caressed my hair, kissed me once more, straight on my eye and said: " You dummy. You sweet, sweet innocent dummy. I hope you will be happy in life."
And with that, she ran down the path that lead to the main street.
I looked after her for a long time, not understanding what just happened, why did she leave, where did she go, what had I done?
And then it dawned on me. For the longest time I just sat there, on those steps and looked at the school building, somehow knowing that the time of innocence just ended.
I don`t know what happened to her later on. School was out in a couple of weeks, and pretty soon the war in my country started. The war that destroyed everything.
Except these beautiful memories.
And in nights like these are, when only my heart is talking to me, I long for that innocent, young, dumb and naive guy I had once been.
Cause the man who is writing this is everything but that.
Yeah, my dear and sweet friend...I hope you survived it all, and I also hope, just like you hoped for me, that you are happy and that life is kind on you...somewhere....

When I clicked New Posts and saw a thread started by Srbo 35 minutes ago, I was so happy.
Just as I expected, another beautiful story written by a man who's probably seen more death and destruction than all of us on this board.
Yet, he still finds the beauty in this world...in his wife, his sweet daughter, the friends he keeps, and the friend in this story whose love was silent, but strong; shy and innocent.
Just as you think of her, Srbo, I'm sure she is somewhere thinking of you from time to time, wondering what happened to her sweet, innocent dummy...who's not so naive anymore, but whose wisdom and experiences have made him into a shining soul, a man who feels everything with his heart...a wonderful father and husband and friend.
Thank you, again, for helping me to see that my situation is, well, pretty good when I really think about it. Life doesn't turn out how we think it will, or hope it will, or even pray it will. But life does bring people into our lives who prove that love is beautiful. Your stories always do that for me. d

Srbo, thanks you for the story! I also felt like crying in the end, that's very touching... It also reminded me of the stuff going in my life... maybe, because I am still too naive... Anyway, your story is great and there is a lot to learn from it.
