I just finished Hearts in Suspension and am literally left reeling. First the biographical parts from SK in particular and others in general were so well written that I felt like they were actually reliving those days. Those were their years of coming of age and those years define a person, no matter the era. It so well defined an era that I can only read about.
Those years changed things for all of us. A little incident came to mind after finishing the book. I graduated high school in 1976 and until then seniors got yearbooks a week before everyone else. We decided to stage a sit in in the principals office in protest. A load of us, including yours truly, went into the principals and sat down telling the secretary why we were there. I got the feeling they were kind of laughing at us, but sent in the head of the yearbook staff. We offered to help with stuff they were behind on in order to get what we wanted. I wonder now if there would have been anything other than complaining if not for the generation than went before us?
