Saw Dr. Sleep which I loved. While a very good adaptation of the book, it was also creepy as hell. Brilliant ending. I know a couple of people that expected a straight up sequel to The Shining and were disappointed. That is how it was marketed, but there is so much more to it than that. My husband never read the book and while he has the benefit of my experience, he loved the atmosphere. I saw Yesterday. It really was just a rom com. Some of the things that were lrft out were just random and that's okay. I think people took it WAY too seriously. Loved the happy ending.
We saw Doctor Sleep and Andy was the same - he enjoyed the movie even though he had never read either book.

I would like to go see it again, actually. We had a couple of numpties sitting directly behind us who would not shut up and kept yapping through the whole film. Finally had to get up and move about 10 feet away from them so I could concentrate (but I could still hear them, even with one ear plugged!) Some people are just clueless.

Being Charlie- Starring Nick Robinson (Love, Simon), Common and Cary Elwes. Directed by Rob Reiner based on a screenplay written by Nick Reiner and Matt Elisofon. Nick plays the troublesome 18 year old son of a famous Hollywood actor who is running for Governor. Decently acted but pretty much by the book plot.

Departure- starring Alex Lawther and Juliet Stevenson. An English mother and her teenage son are preparing for the sale of their vacation home in France. Eliot is becoming alienated from his mother and struggling with his sexuality while his mother is upset over the crumbling of her marriage. A local teenage boy enters their lives and both mother and son are forced to confront their desires and each other. This is a brilliantly acted film, somewhat slow in pace but it definitely pays off in the end. It tries to be a little artsy (I did get somewhat tired of seeing clips of leaves blowing in the wind and far away landscapes instead of the actors) but I really think that the three main actors excelled at conveying the emotions of their characters. If you like quiet character studies then this is one for you.

Beautiful Boy- starring Steve Carrell and Timothee Chalemet. Everyone in this movie brings their A game to the screen. Timothee Chalemet was nominated for an Oscar for his role here but lost. He does an excellent job but he really didn't deserve to win for this role. He should have won for his role a 'Elio' in Call Me By Your Name the previous year. The story of a meth addicted young man and the effect that his addiction has on his family. Based on the autobiographies 'Tweak' by Nick Sheff and 'Beautiful Boy' by his father. It's rather washed down as it doesn't really creep into the darker areas that the books did. I had to order the bluray from Canada as it's only available in the US to stream from Amazon (it's an Amazon movie).

Alex Lawther (Departure) is one of my favorite young actors. I thought he was amazing in this movie. He's also in the Netflix show The End Of The F***ing World and he was in the movie Imitation Game (and a few others).

Saw "Joker" this last weekend. A truly masterful performance by Joaquin Phoenix. TBH, never been a big fan of his, but changed my mind after seeing this movie. It was a disturbing movie, in a good way. He really should get some kind of award for his role. He's the best Joker since Jack Nicholson, imho.

I've never seen any of his other movies but I was very impressed with him in this. I watched the 'extras' on the dvd and there is an interview with him and the writer/director that was pretty enlightening. Alex, after reading the script, asked the writer/director why his character was so unlikable but Alex somehow was able to make him a very likable kid.
