SHAFT 1971. Can you dig it? right on.

Who's the black private dick
That's a sex machine to all the chicks?
(Shaft)
You're damn right

Who is the man
That would risk his neck for his brother man?
(Shaft)
Can you dig it?

Who's the cat that won't cop out
When there's danger all about?
(Shaft)
Right on

They say this cat Shaft is a bad mother
(Shut your mouth)
But I'm talkin' 'bout Shaft
(Then we can dig it)

He's a complicated man
But no one understands him but his woman
(John Shaft)

I assume this was the 70s section of The Criterion Channel. I watched Shaft as well as Thank God It's Friday, Klute and Welcome to LA. Welcome To LA was a weird one. It was kind of like a Robert Altman movie (big cast and numerous story lines) but not done as well. It didn't have a strong central story line to tie all the smaller stories together. It was basically a bunch of couples who wanted to be with someone else and eventually ended up back with the people they started with.

Actually, I caught this on TCM. It was fun and a bit cringe worthy for today's world.

Little time capsules of the world at the time aren't they? Not only in attitude, but language, scenery, styles.... I love watching them just for all those things.

The Criterion Channel has a bunch of Sidney Poitier movies but they are leaving today. Too bad I noticed too late. I watched In The Heat Of The Night a couple nights ago and Uptown Saturday Night last night. There are several more I want to see but I'll have to wait for them to come back. Uptown is a comedy and I was surprised at how good Sidney was in a comedy.

I don't think I've ever seen Sidney in a comediy. I have seen in The Heat of the Night. I have to say, at one time long ago, I would have just sat and watched that as the entertainment it is meant to be. Seeing it not too long ago, it was still very entertaining, but it made me cringe.

We learn better. We do better. We act better. We think better.

Time capsules.

I looked Sidney up on Wikipedia and he's still around. He's in his 90s.

No, I asked, what was his last movie. Do you know the last movie he was in?

I could look it up, but thought since you just looked at his wiki page, you might have seen what his last role was.

He was missing from movies for about 10 years or so in the 70s and 80s and he came back with Shoot To Kill and a few others. The last I remember on the list was Sneakers with River Phoenix.

Thanks. I don't think I've seen either of the two you mentioned.

I didn't know Criterion had him on so like you, I'll have to wait for another go round.

I only found those movies because I went to the section that said leaving April 30 and that's where they were. I never saw a special section with his movies like you usually see or saw those movies come up in the carousel at the top.

I try to check out the leaving section once in a while to see if there's anything there I want to catch before it goes away. There are so many movies I want to see on the Criterion Channel that it's hard to keep up. There are a lot of foreign language films on Criterion I want to see but I have to make sure I am not going to have distractions when I watch those since I need to concentrate on the subtitles. You can't just casually watch a foreign language film.

No. foreign films demand all of you. But most of the time, it's worth it.

Good catch on the "leaving" section. I'll have to pay better attention to that myself.

Saw a good one that just showed up on The Criterion Channel called Gloria. It's a John Cassavettes movie. It's about an ex mobster woman that is trying to hide a young boy the mob is after (the boy's dad worked for the mob and things went sideways)

Also saw another Sidney Poitier movie on Criterion that I liked called The Slender Thread. It's about a college student (Sidney) who works part time at a suicide hotline. He's very inexperienced at this and basically just fills in when the others are out. He gets a call from a woman who is trying to kill herself and has taken a bunch of pills. She wants to talk to him but won't give any information about where she's at or who she is. So the movie is Sidney trying to get information out of this woman so he can get rescue people to her. It's a very tense movie. It's from 1965 and wait until you see how difficult it was to attempt to trace a call in 1965. :)

The Wicker Man (1973). Why, morgan, why?? Well, because I saw the sad remake many years ago. Wanted to see the original, but never had the opportunity. It's streaming now on Netflix. Knew if I didn't watch it now, it might be a long time before I had the chance again.

Creepy and dark. Slow burn. But the religious element (that I don't remember in the remake) was extremely upsetting. And add the animal stuff...yikes. Had to mute the last five minutes. This movie is incredibly disturbing on many levels.
Your last sentence is correct - it's a very creepy movie, but well done - I remember seeing it on VHS tape a long time ago - I think Britt Eklund is in it?

Christopher Lee enjoyed working on the movie so much that he refused payment.

Groundhog Day (1993)- A day in the life of Bill Murray. Doesn't need much introduction, one of the most iconic comedy movies out there. It had a bit of a slow start but by the time he stole the groundhog I was laughing. Who doesn't want to see Bill Murray say "I'm a god"? 7/10

The Wicker Man (1973)- It was okay, I guess. Man goes to island to find missing girl only to realize the islanders are Pagans. The actual mystery felt really lacking and more of a background thing. It just seemed more like a compilation of off-putting imagery and nothing else. It wasn't until the last 5 minutes that it actually was a bit disturbing. I hated the main character, there was really nothing to him asides from being really uptight in his religious beliefs. There's definitely some message about religious hypocrisy in there, but I'd think it work better in a drama or something. I can't say it was bad, I just didn't find it particularly good either. It weirded me out most of the time, and I guess that's what the point was. 5/10 I guess. You mean to tell me all Scottish people aren't like this?
