Uncut Gems (2019): Wow, an actually good Adam Sandler movie. He certainly proves he's a great actor when he isn't doing half-assed comedies. Great movie, it was constantly hectic and a little hard to get into at first, but it really pays off. The last 30 minutes legitimately made me tense, not something that often happens when I watch movies, probably because I went into this almost blind. The main character is a stupid *******, but the movie does a good job at making you root for him in the end. Unfortunately my internet kinda gave up halfway through so the resolution got mutilated and I had to watch a vaguely pixelated version of the movie, not bad enough to where I couldn't tell what was going on, but enough to be annoying. I'd really recommend it if you don't mind an overabundance of yelling, cursing, and slurs.

Aliens (1986): James Cameron directs the more action-oriented adaptation to the 1979 horror classic. Although I didn't think it was as good as the original, it was still really good. The cast was pretty good and worked well together, and it had pretty good child acting. The Xenomorph Queen is an awesome feat of practical effect, and I like how she closes the gap on how the facehuggers are created in order to reproduce the Xenomorphs. Pretty good sci-fi action/horror.

Critters (1986): It was okay, I didn't expect much from it, but at the very least it was entertaining. Another 80s movie where cute, fuzzy monsters unleash havoc on a small town and kill people, as a result of the Gremlins craze (although, if I remember correctly, the crew behind this one insisted the script existed before Gremlins). The critter effects weren't bad, and they did have that perfect blend between cute and evil that they were probably achieving for. Some of the humor was decent, I liked the little subtitle conversations the critters had with each other while tearing up the house. I also thought the effect at the end where the house restores itself was kinda cool. As for criticisms, the bounty hunter plot was stupid and just felt like a plot device, and it just seemed to waste time more than anything, and they played that one original song on the soundtrack way too much. It also took way too long for the critters to start their rampage, which is bad when the movie is only 1 hour and 26 minutes long. Overall, not as bad as it could've been, and managed to be the fun little monster horror movie it probably aimed to be.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Michael Biehn at a Con, great actor and a lovely guy.
I remember going to comic palooza one time with my friend, which we do almost every year as it falls on the week of his birthday, and the two guys from the original Chips tv show were going to be there for one of the celebrity meet and greets. Now, my mom heard they were going to be there, and Chips was like her favorite tv show when she was little back when it was still airing, mostly because she had a crush on both the actors who were going to be at the panel. She asked me if I could go and say hi to them and maybe get a picture, which I reluctantly agreed to, even though I had no idea what the hell I was supposed to say if I did go and meet them, like "Hi, I know absolutely nothing about your 70s Cop soap opera, but my mom grew up with it and wanted me to tell you she had a huge crush on you back when she was 7"?

However when we got there they not only weren't going to be there on the day we went, but they were also one of those "higher class celebrities" or something, where you had to pay a lot of money just to meet and get a picture with them, compared to a lot of the other people at the celebrity panel who you could meet and talk to for free and just pay like $3 for a photo or autograph. So in a way I was glad because it saved me the awkwardness of that conversation, and at least my mom was glad I at least tried to see if they were there.

Celebrieties simply do not like meeting fans, luckily Mr Biehn was not one of those.

I never understood why Biehn never became a big movie star. He had the looks and the body but for some reason he just never went on to the next level of stardom to become a household name. Bad management? Bad juju with Hollywood elite? Bad choices of movies after his exposure in Terminator?

He has worked and been in major films for most of his career, success is a fickle thing, I think he is more of a character actor than the major movie star Brad Pitt type.

But he could have been a Brad Pitt type of actor. He had the looks and had the attention when Terminator came out and also when Aliens was released as he had a pretty good part in that.

Honestly, these are a lot of actors who never got the respect they deserve, Biehn is certainly a part of that, he was in movies like Tombstone and others, really, I think it just comes to luck with regards to who becomes a "star".

Christine (1983)
I checked out John Carpenter's Christine recently. Stephen King and John Carpenter, what's not to love? I thought it was pretty good, dated in some scenes but you would expect that with a movie from ages ago. I liked the fact that it doesn't have the typical good or bad ending, I thought for sure that Christine was going to get them all. From what I understand this is pretty faithful to the book, good to know. The set peieces with Christine herself were excellent, much better than I thought a film from this period would be. Cast was pretty good, have no idea if they did anything after Christine right enough. Surprised that John has not done any other Steve novels. Music was excellent as well, George Thorogood, come on. The car itself, the Fury, is brillaint. Overall, very good.

Hearts in Atlantis (2001)
Excellent. Anthony Hopkins is brillaint at the part, surprised he did not get any nominations, then again, most things Anthony Hopkins does is excellent. Very different from most Steve stories, I believe this was a period were he was after mainstream recognitionby critics. Another story which is related to The Dark Tower, of course with the CK's servents being after Ted. Heartbraking ending. Good to know that Ted will escape them though, as detailed in the self-titled TDT novel. WOuld have preferred had Ted reached out to Bobby later in life, like he does in the book. Overall, excellent.

Watched Artemis Fowl, didn't really do anything for me, I've not read any of the books so I can't compare but the movie was a bit of a lazy mess, impressive cast and special effects and with Branagh they had a top notch director but I found the whole thing a soulless experience, maybe it'll find it's audience somewhere down the line but I couldn't sit through it again.

I have the blu-ray and in one of the bonus features, there is a segment on the stunts. This was pre CGI days and when the gas station blew up I think there was a guy on fire driving a car that was on fire (it's been a few years since I've seen it so the details may be a little off). Anyway, they only had one chance to do that scene since they actually blew up the building. The man driving the car was really on fire and really driving out of a burning building. The stunt was incredibly dangerous and no one got hurt (maybe some singed eyebrows). The behind the scenes feature about coordinating that stunt was amazing.

I like this movie too. This is one of the overlooked and under rated SK adaptations. A very young Anton Yelchin is in it too.

A not often talked about Anthony Hopkins performance as well, proving why he is one of the best. Maybe because it is so different from most SK related media is the reason why it is not appreciated all that much. My only complaint is that I wish is that Ted had sent a letter to Bobby when he was older, letting him know that he had escaped, like in the book.

Practical effects destroy CGI every time. The stuntmen did great work on that film, might get the Blu Ray after what you've said. No doubt that had a lot of people there to make sure everything went alright, but with stunts like that there is always the chance that something might go wrong.

If you can play 4K discs, there is a 4K release of Christine. I have the older regular blu-ray. If you buy discs, this site is great. It reviews the picture quality, sound quality and bonus features of discs as well as the content. It's very handy to see if it's worth buying a 4K disc.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Michael Biehn at a Con, great actor and a lovely guy.

We envy you. Always was a favorite of Grandma's and mine. Glad to hear he's a nice guy.

I've only been to one Con, and it was fun but just a little too frenetic and goofy (and crowded) for me. But Kate Mulgrew was one of the big attractions there, and oh my, was she gracious. Charmed my shoes off, sitting in the big audience. Also Jeff Goldblum and the guys who did and were promoting Independence Day (that tells you how long ago THAT was), and I gotta say, although Mr. Goldblum seems to be a one-trick pony, acting-wise, he sure was engaging and excited to interact with the crowd.

Anywayyyyy....

The Healer. Saw it on Netflix. It was kinda fun and quirky, and by the time we hit the end, I thought it was all right, just a little let down. Like they had a good thing going, but then they had to throw in a dusting of Godspell at the end.

The VelociPastor. A pastor who turns into a velociraptor. It's an intentionally bad, campy movie, but it held its own doing so. Elder Son and I watched it while Grandma shook her head and muttered, "Boys." It doesn't even try to redeem itself. It breaks the fourth wall a couple times, explaining that they didn't have the money for the effects that the script called for. At the end, in the Big Fight, the hilariously stupid velociraptor costume makes the 1954 Godzilla one look polished.

Having said that and having enjoyed it, once is enough. Thanks, guys.

Diversity of opinion is an okay thing, right?

We tried to watch it, and I agree that Mr. Sandler does a really good job. However, if 15, 20 minutes have gone by and I don't care of a single character in the story lives or dies by then, well, life is short and even shorter at my age, so I walk.

Aliens (1986):
James Cameron directs the more action-oriented adaptation to the 1979 horror classic.

This is actually ensconced in family culture and is one of my top 10 movies ever. So much quotable stuff, and how Cameron did all that without CG is remarkable. The Battle Royale by itself between Ripley and the Queen is a thing of cinematic beauty. We liked everything about that one, and "They can bill me," "It's the only way to be sure," and, "Mostly," among others, are instantly recognizable, mainstay go-to quotes in the family.
