I had to return some items to the store today and they gave me cash back. The $10 bill looked a little odd so I took a closer look at it. Turns out it was a 1934 series issue! Back in 1934 this bill would have an equivalent spending power of $171 today!

Anyway, I thought it might be cool to have a thread for people to post pictures of any unusual coins or bills, and also it might be neat to see currencies from all the different countries of the world where Stephen King Message Board members live!

Continental Currency. Five Dollars issued August 13, 1776 in the state of New York. All currency was hand signed and hand numbered back then.

“Tis death to counterfeit” Man those forefathers were a hard-assed bunch.

I use it as my bookmark, and little pieces keep falling off. Probably not my smartest idea ever.

(I also have currency from every year a war was fought on US soil. An 1847 $20 during the Mexican–American War. An 1865 $10 Confederate bill which was the last printing and they had women and children hand cutting them to size so they are all pretty uneven bills. A 1935 $1 bill with “Hawaii” stamped numerous times on the front and back by the US government on all currency in existence in Hawaii because they feared an invasion by Japan in WWII. Having “Hawaii” stamped on all currency we could effectively encourage all countries to refuse to accept it as it would not be backed by the US gov’t if Hawaii was invaded.)

Very cool collection, DiO'Bolic! I can't believe you use that continental currency as a bookmark!
Thanks. My favorite is a 1911 Indian Head $5 Gold Half Eagle coin.

The Continental was a bit ratty and faded when I got it. I use it as the bookmark for the current read paperback I keep in the car (Thinner right now). It makes for a good conversational piece. I’m keeping an eye out for a Continental Note printed by Benjamin Franklin (at a reasonable price) for my collection.

I also have a Cold War era Czechoslovakia bill as a souvenir. During the 70’s my father’s aunt in her 80’s would travel by train in a cold month once a year into what was then Czechoslovakia to visit her relatives. We would all pitch in, and while in Europe she would convert the cash to Czechoslovakian money and sew it into the lining of the outercoat she wore. On one trip soldiers grabbed her and were going to take her off the train with AK-47’s drawn. She started screaming and making a scene, and told them they will have to shoot her before she would go with them. She put her body up against the muzzle of an AK and demanded they shoot. After the soldiers had a little confab they decided she was crazy and wasn’t worth the bother of an international incident, and let her go.
