Was Cowboys and Aliens a flop? I saw it, but I don't know that answer...

Yes, one of the most expensive flops of all time. Look at the last sentence under Box Office:

Cowboys & Aliens - Wikipedia

I remember not liking it very much and not something I would likely rewatch.

I think generally in recent years westerns have had some popularity back with a show like Hell on Wheels (which is very good) and a number of westerns at the cinema. I don't think the genre is really big though with contemporary audiences, and Dark Tower is far from an ordinary western. Probably a lot will depend on how they market it.

Actually there is also Preacher, which I think is a western which has supernatural elements, but I'm not familiar with either the show or the book.
And in terms of games, there aren't so many, but Call of Juarez, and especially Red Dead Redemption is very popular.

So maybe Dark Tower might not be such a difficult film to sell, especially with King's name. But if it really will click with audiences as a film we'll have to see.

There's also Westworld, which seems to be doing well, both in viewership and with critics. Granted it's more of a Western/Sci-fi, than Western/Fantasy, but still.

That's right. I haven't seen it yet, but it seems to be good. Hopefully it gets broadcasted here too - a lot of American shows are, some a couple of months after they're broadcast in the US (like Scream Queens for example), others mere days (like The Walking Dead).

Dark Tower certainly seems to arrive at a time when there are some similar semi-westerns (is semi-western a word? - it is now).
