I work retail and will be working on Turkey Day. Someone mentioned that if there weren't any customers that wanted to shop then the stores wouldn't be open. Quite true! It's kind of like the saying 'What came first- the chicken or the egg?' So, if people do start to boycott the stores that will be open, then the retailers will see that it's not worth the expense to be open on Turkey Day or Christmas. But as long as there are folks who don't care about spending time with their families and would rather shop on a Holiday, then the stores will be open. I long for the days when stores weren't even open on Sundays let alone holidays and everyone went to Grandma's house for dinner.......

I used to work at Belk! I'm so glad I don't anymore. I remember when I worked there we were open super late on Christmas Eve. And there was virtually no one in the store and the people who were there were really rude. And a few years ago I worked the night before Thanksgiving and there were two women who were there until 11pm and we had closed at 10. They were also incredibly rude. I think it's a trend.
I only work for them on an on call basis, and get this, when they called me to work they had the audacity to mention that I had not work there much for 2013, and "we need to re-evaluate your on call status if you're not available for the holidays". I thought to myself, well hell....I work every time you call me, you pompous jerk.... So, I've decided Thanksgiving day will be my last day of availability for them. The discount is nice, but not really worth the way they treat people.

I feel sorry for those who will be forced to work when they don't want to, and I certainly won't be shopping anywhere, but there are plenty who do like to shop and others who like to work--maybe they don't celebrate the holiday or just don't care. They have a right to do their thing, too, I guess. To each their own :)

When I worked in Healthcare I worked the holidays voluntarily so people with kids could stay home. I understand that some things cannot stop for the holidays but I do not need to buy a 10 for a dollar pack of socks on Thanksgiving day. No sir.
I might stop at the Walmart on Thanksgiving and bring the workers some candy or something.
Wait... you can get 10 prs of socks for a dollar on Turkey Day? Wheeeere did you say this is?
Kidding!

I love to shop, I love to shop on the holidays when it fits in with my day, plans, family yada yada. I love the sales, I love the holiday atmosphere, music, decorations...the works.

Opinions must out, when asked for, Flake. I cant help it! It wont be the 1st or last time its gotten me in trouble! Though I do like to think I'm polite about it! (I also like to think I am funny....so I am aware that not everyone agrees with what I think I am!)

Some people do tend to get very rude around Christmas. I think there's a little pressure on people that time of year and it tends to bring out the worst in some of them.

Sure, it fits in for me to shop on the holidays as I dont have to work them. So I'll always shop them...and feel bad for those that have to work 'em...same as my friends feel bad for me working weekends and my partner, the evenings...but I dont expect them not to go out, so that may eventually change. Lol, also if I start to think I'm a cat...I'm going to need some serious help.

I think it's sad that we turn the holiday that is supposed to be about giving thanks for what we have into a day for acquiring more that we want because we aren't content with what we have.

Needless to say I won't be shopping.
I dont think I have ever been to the mall or shops simply 'for acquiring more that I want because I am not content with what I have'. My Tomboy daughter asking for a dress (for the 1st time ever!) was a sweet and special afternoon at the mall-for example. I have others, but I'm sure you get the gist.

...this is all I will say....I have a long standing loathing of the depths that crass commercialism has gone...many have allowed themselves to be brainwashed to think that shopping is more important than family, friends and rejoicing in one another and whatever God you may believe in...saving a buck is worth no-ones soul...
