I'm the only person in the world who can live on protein shakes and salad for a month and gain weight......
I completely understand. When I had to be in the hospital for a week a few years back because of complications with having a gall bladder removal, all I could have was broth and jello at every single bleeping meal. Toward the end of it, I wasn't even eating most of it because I couldn't stand the thought of one more bite. I haven't eaten jello since. I went to my Weight Watchers check in as soon as I got out of the hospital and had gained 2 pounds. Just. Not. Fair.

Your bodies are just really good at self-preservation. They see the liquid diet as a famine and retain water. You might be dehydrated if you don't drink plenty of water. Metabolism varies so much by person.

I was on a saline drip to hydrate me for a few days, too, but the broth was likely high in sodium and did contribute to retaining water and the weight gain. I also have hypothyroidism so have to fight a slow metabolism even with meds for it. My job and hobbies all being sedentary don't help either. And now being of a certain age, it's twice as hard to lose weight even with diet and exercise. Okay, whine over but no cheese, please. :smile:

Speaking of famine etc. I almost considered going on that lemon juice fast - you drink the juice of a lemon (supposed to be organic of course) mixed with a bottle of water (500 ml), 2 tablespoons of pure maple syrup and a dash of cayenne pepper.

The idea is to have six to eight of these per day for as long as you can stand it.

I actually did this back in 1995 when Josh went to visit his Dad in Alberta for a couple of weeks.

I think I lasted about 10 days. I did lose 20 pounds but I was a lot younger then!

It is supposed to give your digestive system a break. They also recommend salt water flushes, plus a mild laxative herbal tea :suspect:

Was talking with a chiropractor a few years back and told him about this - he actually endorsed it and said that you can even clean out your gallbladder of stones using this regimen. It's pretty brutal but after awhile you don't even think about eating.

It makes you realize how much time we spend preparing food, eating it and cleaning up afterward so it is sort of a break. Hard to do if you have to prepare food for others, however.

It's like you're describing my life here. I've had significant weight gain over the past few years due to medical issues (like hypothyroidism) and side effects of medications to treat other medical issues. Getting older just makes it worse too. It doesn't matter what I eat (or don't eat) or how much I move, it just keeps coming. Perhaps, I was cursed...

I've had significant weight gain over the past few years due to medical issues (like hypothyroidism) and side effects of medications to treat other medical issues. Getting older just makes it worse too. It doesn't matter what I eat (or don't eat) or how much I move, it just keeps coming. Perhaps, I was cursed...
What I used to be able to do to lose weight only helps me maintain now. I've never been one who enjoys exercising (I hear there are actually people who do :smile:) but have stepped it up just recently as I know how important it is to keep moving as we get older. On a good week I do 3 yoga classes at an intermediate level and am into my second week of an 80 day online video workout program and am more conscious of what and how much food I'm eating. I'm hoping to see results by Kon time, if not before, and keep going even after that. Better health aside, it never hurts to be able to see physical changes to keep the motivation up. :smile2:

I've never been one who enjoys exercising (I hear there are actually people who do :smile:) but have stepped it up just recently as I know how important it is to keep moving as we get older. On a good week I do 3 yoga classes at an intermediate level and am into my second week of an 80 day online video workout program and am more conscious of what and how much food I'm eating. I'm hoping to see results by Kon time, if not before, and keep going even after that. Better health aside, it never hurts to be able to see physical changes to keep the motivation up. :smile2:
Yeah, same struggle here. The last time I successfully lost weight, I was on a totally unhealthy 500 calorie per day diet coupled with daily hour plus aerobics workouts. Other than that, I'm lucky if I maintain. It is definitely harder to keep up the motivation when you aren't seeing any results. And harder still when you have a bad back that makes most forms of exercise painful. I'll confess that I tend to just give up because it is too hard to maintain an uphill battle endlessly. I'm trying to change my attitude and just do things I enjoy like deep water exercise, yoga, and paddle boating for the sake of being active and having fun and cooking healthy & delicious meals without obsessing about the calorie count rather than constantly obsessing and focusing on my weight but I do have an elliptical machine in my office that I try to get on at some point during my work from home days.

Other than that, I'm lucky if I maintain. It is definitely harder to keep up the motivation when you aren't seeing any results. And harder still when you have a bad back that makes most forms of exercise painful. I'll confess that I tend to just give up because it is too hard to maintain an uphill battle endlessly. I'm trying to change my attitude and just do things I enjoy like deep water exercise, yoga, and paddle boating for the sake of being active and having fun and cooking healthy & delicious meals without obsessing about the calorie count rather than constantly obsessing and focusing on my weight but I do have an elliptical machine in my office that I try to get on at some point during my work from home days.
I don't know about you, but the next person who tries to tell me that muscle weighs more than fat when I am disappointed that the scales aren't going down even though I'm exercising more and eating right is putting themselves at dire risk of being punched in the face (at least in my thoughts). :biggrin2: A pound is a pound is a pound no matter what it's made of. I do get the concept of muscle being denser so takes up less room in the body than fat but it's one thing to be okay with that when you're only a few pounds over your "ideal" weight and another when it's 10 or more. :mad:

I think being middle aged is the most difficult for weight gain. I work hard,exercise &eat right...It just does seem to reduce body fat. ** Check out dietland on AMC..very interesting show about women's body image.
I just ordered the book that Dietland is based on from my local library (cannot get it in large type but still, it did look interesting).
