My folks are all from western North Carolina, i.e. the Appalachians, not the coast. I ate souse when I was a kid, and remember not hating it. Everything was homemade, so I'm sure I could get a recipe. But.... nah.

My family is all from the eastern end of the state (Halifax, Rocky Mount, Wilson...that I95 corridor basically) and they grew up eating that stuff too. I guess during the Depression, they had to make do with whatever they had.

Oh, and our barbecue is better! ::P

I'm in the western mountains of NC....and while my family will eat the likes of livermush, wilted branch lettuce, and cornbread crumbled in a glass of milk, I won't touch any of that.....never have, never will.
There's nothing like a good vinegar or mustard based bbq......just sayin'

She was a real sweetheart and quite a character - I miss her a lot - when I hear a lady with a Scottish accent it makes me feel good and brings back memories.

Andy gets a big kick out of the above video
I have a hearing problem so any accents can throw me. I have to watch my netflix shows from other countries with the closed captioning on.

Vinegar based BBQ with a side of slaw! And hush puppies! And a giant glass of super sweet tea!

No wilted lettuce? Okay, I can get that.

No cornbread and milk? That right there is my ultimate comfort food.

Probably because my parents immigrated north for jobs, and neither of them could bake cornbread right (I figured it out finally, with my cousin's help). I only got the good stuff when we went back home to my grannie and papa's for the holidays and the summer. I lived for the moment I tumbled from the station wagon and onto the farm. I didn't care that there was no indoor plumbing. That was my safe place and I love it like the sky loves blue. My sister and I usually stayed for most of the summer, pretty much; my parents went back north to keep working.

So, I guess what I'm saying is, when I put a spoonful of warm cornbread and fresh milk in my mouth, I'm not just eating.

I'm riding Dolly across the field. I'm stepping down into the well house for water. I'm on my back in the haymow, my head dangling out the door so we can share a purloined cigarette and blow smoke at the milky way.*

*we knew better than to smoke in the barn. we were bad kids and figured as long as the Kool 100 was technically outside the barn, we were okay.

Oh Sunny, you and your east coast vinegar BBQ, come to the dark side, we all know MEMPHIS style BBQ is far superior to that east coast Tar Heel stuff.....;;D;;D
