I wish my ancestors would have done this. I inherited some black and white photos, most of which are of my deaf great-uncle Coleman, and few are marked. I keep these two dozen vanilla hued photos in a wood box lined with green felt. Some of the corners are bent and margins marked in curlicue pencil. One is a man in a straw hat atop a 20-foot ladder pruning tree limbs. Behind him is a barnwall and he's looking at the camera biting a drooping Sherlockian pipe. Another is my great-uncle's friend, Speck, sleeping (resting? faking?) on a brass bed. His white shirt and tie loosened like rope, his dark oiled hair rakish against the pillow, and morning light imprinted on him and the fern wallpaper. I study these pictures every now and then, pics taken in the late '20s in Alabama, and imagine what was going on in these people's lives. They once breathed our air, embraced their families, laughed at dumb jokes...until they had to let go. Yes, label. We need to remember.
Your writing style paints pictures in our minds. Your great uncle is a treasure! Thank you for agreeing about labeling.

Thanks, Spidey. Comments like this are like gold to me. I appreciate it. Yes, with a hundred percent agreement. (When the time is right I'm going to write a story based on my deaf uncle. He was my grandmother's uncle...guess that'd make him my great-great-uncle.)

Since film seems to be a thing of the past, do people print out picture from their digital files much anymore?

The wife has a pile of 8mm tapes she got from her father, and I have some also from my father, that were taken before the age of VCR’s. She looked into transferring them to a digital format but the prices was obscene. So last year I got her a machine that converts 8mm into digital files but the process takes forever (the machine was a bit pricey). The machine basically takes a picture of every frame and puts them together. Several years ago I also got her some equipment that converts VCR tapes into digital files (pretty inexpensive). I like the idea of preserving our old family media into something we can share, and be utilized by others… as long as someone else does it. :)

I'll go back further- have a case of 8mm film rolls. Even the projector. Once again-- no idea who(m) I am watching.
How difficult is it to / or even possible to transfer audio cassettes to cds? Most of my early SK audio books are cassettes.

Our old 8mm projector bit the big one. I looked into getting one, then film the projection with a digital camera, but those things are pretty pricey, also. So I went the way of getting a machine that does it. If people want to preserve old 8mm tapes they may not have much time left as they become brittle over time.

The wife played some of the video she created from the 8mm tapes where her father and old hippie aunt were over one day. Everyone argued who some of the people were in the home movies as most were from the 50's and 60's.

Can you play the audio tapes and record them digitally using a mic on your computer?

You can get a used Windows XP computer for next to nothing these days. Some people are even giving them away.

One thing about those home movies from the 60's... wild clothes, women with high hair, cigarettes and booze in every scene. Interesting times. ")

She could always have Ms Mod or Mr King read the novels onto a CD or MP3 for her. I mean... like what else are they going to do in retirement... sit in a rocking chair and grow old? :)
Actually, Sai King is probably in her neck of the woods by now or soon for the winter. He could just stop over and read her a chapter now and then!
