I hate it when I'm at a coffee shop or restaurant and people at other tables use a lot of profanity. I just find it disturbing. Several different online sources seem to agree that gentlemen shouldn't swear in front of women. One article even said that a gentleman shouldn't swear in public. Period. Similarly, I think women shouldn't swear in front of children or the elderly.

There is actually a list of guidelines for gentlemen:

I don't think it is a gender issue - no one should use profanity in public

Public swearing has actually been banned in Virginia and 3 Australian states. In jurisdictions where it has not been declared illegal by statute, the utterance of profanity outside of a private dwelling can still be classified as disorderly conduct or a breach of the peace depending on the severity and the involvement of drugs or alcohol.

I agree. I grew up with family members who cursed on a regular basis but seldom in public. I think it's just respectful to refrain, the same way one would avoid being offensive in other ways.

I"ve been working on construction sites since I was 15 years old, when you hear bad language day in day out in that environment it just rubs off on you, kinda unavoidable. It was much the same for everybody then, I remember when my Dad was in hpspital having a spinal fusion procedure done and one of the guys from the site went in to see him, when he walked in he said to my Dad "Hello Lee, how the f**k are you? Can I get you a cup of f**king tea? Do you take milk and f**king sugar" . My Dad had to bring him out of the ward and out of earshot of the other patients.

Banning swearing in the general public is stupid, if you don’t like swear words maybe don’t pay attention to other people’s conversations. I can understand individual places making rules against swearing in their place of buisness, but people should feel free to say whatever they want within the public as long as they aren’t hurting or harassing anyone. I can’t imagine somebody being prosecuted for casually swearing within their own conversation, that’s just so petty, unless by swearing they were harassing someone.
