haha point taken flake.. The only thing I will say is I didn't start it, I was just trying to respond to the guy that originally posted, and it seemed like she jumped in and was making me out as bad guy..
I hear you... it's all good. Sometimes things annoy us more on some days than on others. You guys will work it out, I'm sure. I have faith in you both! :)

You seem to be missing my point, which I thought was obvious and which is: If Mr Mercedes is the first in a trilogy of novels the remaining two of which are yet to be written, how can you say you already prefer it as a stand alone book? You can't know that yet.

LOL man, YOU are missing my point. The fact that I didn't read them it's irrelevant. The first book CAN work as a stand-alone story, that was the feeling many had before Steve announced the next books--that the story was told, the end. I'm just saying I like this way better, that all the characters had THAT closure, etc. etc.

Of course, now I'm wrong, and they'll be back for more, have another closure. But it doesn't change the fact that I prefer just one book about Detective Hodges (nor it means I won't like the other books).

What blunthead seems to be saying is that you can't possibly know yet whether you won't change your mind after reading the next two novels. You may feel at this moment that you prefer it as a standalone, but the next two may completely blow your mind. You may then feel that it wouldn't have worked if it had been left as a standalone book. You can't know, no-one can, if it will be better or not. In other words, an open mind is always best.

Peace and love to all :biglove:

There are so many serial detective novels on the current market - many of which are very good - that it's hard to get excited about King joining that crowded genre. I can read just about anything King writes and enjoy it including these books, but would have preferred a couple of original novels over detective sequels. And you really have to suspend disbelief at some point to buy that one retired detective and his teenage sidekick can solve so many major crimes while the police cannot. I can do that up to a certain point, but then it becomes somewhat absurd even in a fictional context. I'll read them though!

I gots to agree with RichardX somewhat. I enjoyed Mr Mercedes but its SK's imagination I love. I read murder mysteries in between SK's imaginative fiction. I'm a big Carl Hiaasen fan. I'm afraid SK will stop writing imaginative fiction if he gets on a murder mystery jag :(

He's got a free pass to the dark side, he ain't gonna stop going there and shining his light around the bad-gunky for us. Rest easy.

I gotta be honest. As a published writer of fiction I owe a lot to King. I've read all his books including non-fiction and shorts, and while I always believed his greatest novel was "It" followed closely by "The Shining" I will go out on a limb and state that "Mr. Mercedes" is by far my favorite novel of his. I never thought he would recapture my interests like he did in the late 70's and 80's but after all these years he has created the ultimate psychopathic villain. One whom seems very real.

Yes, you're right. I did say, "thanks for the spoiler." I didn't realize that was such a big deal. Nor did I realize I wasn't allowed to read other people's responses on a public site for fear of spoilers, especially when there's a tool to prevent that. I definitely started it in that case. Sorry, Flake!

I wouldn't have much faith in me right now, Flake. I'm sorry, but I feel like we should be able to point out that people are posting spoilers so that they can kindly do the right thing and think about it for the sake of all others on the board in the future. I am beyond irritated right now. I've been on this board for a long, long time and have never had to deal with a reaction like this for something so incredibly ridiculous and I'm pissed. So, I'm sorry, Flake. I love you. I do. But this is beyond insane.

Yes,pretty clear you were being sarcastic,if you had asked for consideration in the matter and on future posts, probably would have apologized but I don't respond well to sarcasm. In any event,I am done with this subject, and you,so adios..
