Yum Grandpa ! Have you always been a gourmet? I keep wondering if this is ever going to happen to my husband. I would so trade yard work for cooking. Or nightly massages. Anything to get me out of this cooking gig.

The story is pretty well-known in the family. I'm known as the Vulcan, and if you don't get the Star Trek reference, that's fine. I'm the logical/literal one.

We were carrying along in near marital bliss, but for one thing, and Grandma finally hit me with it. "You come home from a day's work, tired. I come home from a day's work, tired. You sit down to decompress. I start cooking to feed the family. Is that equitable?"

Logically, no, it wasn't. So I started cooking, and it became a creative challenge. Well. I like to photograph, I like to write, because they're both creative challenges, and here was a new one. It became a real test to take a wife, me, three kids, with differing tastes, and made something that was tasty and nutritious out of it that we would all eat. And immodestly, I get pretty good at it.

Grandma is a good cook, and she has a few dishes that the kids adore. But I'm the main cook, and when the kids now think fondly of "home cooking," it's mostly me. And all it boiled down to was a change in attitude, i.e. mine.

I don't know cooking theory. I don't know tumeric spice from Homeric legends, and the only thing I know about tarragon is that I'm sensitive to it, and a little bit goes a very long way, and I pretty much avoid it. But I've learned the basics of what I like going with what, I don't use formulas, I work on the inspiration of the evening, I don't mind ripping off general concepts from other people, and what I cook usually - usually - comes out pretty good.

I rank my cooking from:

Fail. Disappointing taste.
Fine. Basic nutritional needs met, taste is unobjectionable.
Reasonable. Pretty tasty. No one will be asking for the recipe, but it's pleasing enough.
Restaurant quality. If I remembered how I made it (I never do), I could sell it.

And on another note, I finished my next long short story. Almost exactly 20,000 words. No, you'll never read it here, because it's fiction. I'm just proud that I got the first draft finished and got to type out "The End."

Mr. King said in Just After Sunset that he wanted to stretch and do the short-story format, because it was a challenge to master. Well, that's relative. I can't tell a story over 25,000 words. I would have to sweat like a wrestler losing 20 pounds to get out 100,000 words. My natural storytelling is the short form.

Which World Leader Could You Be One Day?

My result:
You could be Nelson Mandela! You're a freedom fighter, deeply principled and driven by a desire for fairness and equality. Your ideals are very important to you and you're willing to suffer for them. Nelson Mandela was an anti-apartheid revolutionary who served 27 years in jail under the Apartheid regime. He was South Africa's first black President, and the first elected in a fully democratic election. His political ideology was influenced by Marxism and he advocated for democratic socialism. You will make great strides in the fight for liberty and justice!

Happy Anniversary Walter Oobleck!

I echo the happy anniversary, Walter!

I've been cooking well lately. Last night, I decided to try a side of sweet potato hashbrowns again. I've tried them as mashed potatoes and hashbrowns before, but it never really got there.

Well, last night, I crushed it. Used a combo of teriyaki, balsamic vinaigrette, sirhacha, sauteed onion bits, and various spices to brown them up in. Added some stir-fry, including some Japanese eggplant and leftover pork and chicken (we are not exactly orthodox Jews). Restaurant-worthy. I will try those sweet potato hashbrowns again someday.

Thank you for your kind words! :) I could post in Siggy's misheard lyrics thread...but when we left in my wife's Captiva, we headed up the hill and I think my wife is amused at my hearing (loss) so I mishear allatime, singing some song on the radio about cowboys and slow feet, cowboys! have always had slow feet! lalalala. Don't know what the song actually said but my wife went along with my version. Took a drive up to Eagle Harbor and stopped in at the restaurant there...walleye for me, shrimp for my wife, drinks, salads...then retraced our steps (drive) from our first date. She asked me if I remembered what color shirt she was wearing...red...yes, I'm surprised you remembered! And she reminds me that when she opened the door I stepped back...
it was a blind date, truth be told...I'm a tad embarrassed about that.
...but I told her I wasn't expecting gorgeous...had to run back out to the truck for my phone book...work, me...I took her on an estimate, garage for Ray P. in Hermit's Cove...was doing garages for $12/square foot at the time...got the job, too. What color shirt was I wearing I ask her...blue. I don't remember that, but I was wearing my goof-ball hat...hat that looks like Donald's nephews wear. That got tossed a couple three years ago...I like that hat...it was a good hat. So we went up 26 and took the turn-off down to Lac La Belle and headed south again stopping at Burnet...Barnet...Berrnet...one of those...not Barrette like I thought...named after some guy from the area who played for Boston, Red Sox. George Burnet I think. Last time we found the blueberries there so we found them again, down there at eye level. The sound of car doors...oops...so on so forth. Made it back home in time for the Tigers game at 8...and as usual I get sleepy and kiss her goodnight that's all she wrote she didn't write anymore...right as Cabrera hit a home run. Heh! She hears the crack! as I'm kissing her and you know where her attention went...maybe the honeymoon is over I dunno.

I somehow completely missed that you were celebrating your anniversary! Happy belated wishes to you and your wife, Walt. (I remember one in the past, about the buying flowers dilemma...)

It sounds like a lovely date... I have never 'dated', as such, so those seem like really wonderful memories to have. :)

It was nice. The only thing that could have made it nicer would have been fall colors...still a lot of green, some sporadic color a branch with orange, a stray tree or two purple...my wife thought blue would look nice...but no blue leaves. And yeah...I'll echo Kurben..."what have you done?" Is that one of them down-under thingies?

What a lovely story of your date, Walt. Well, until the kiss anyway.
yeah...Detroit Tigers...can't compete with those guys...she said she'd take care of business later but I was probably too sound asleep...but...the snooze alarm has been going off, so?

Hmmm, you know how you post something without quite thinking it completely through? I may've just done that. :O_O:
People do date each other (but don't necessarily call it that) and go out on dates here. It's just that I have been in one relationship my whole adult life... and we didn't actually date each other as such. I can't really say. sorry.

Walter Oobleck - : "I wasn't expecting gorgeous!" Exactly what every girl wants to hear! Don't ever stop saying that. Sounds like a nice night.

Grandpa You're exactly right - I've hinted about it how it's not exactly fair - him sitting on the couch watching TV, me slaving in the kitchen. He does the laundry as well, I haven't don't laundry in 10 years. He's cute, what can I say?
