I have noticed from people's comments here that it is held in quite high esteem. If I remember reading correctly he wrote this when he was about 18 didn't he?I was reading a blog post suggesting that a well known author from the 60's/70's reckoned that King's novel The Long Walk is one of the best novels of the 1970's. I might read this after I finish It.
Turns out i was wrong! I'm starting The Company of the Dead. So far its correct but the author is David Kowalski, a kind of Alt History thing. They can be very entertaining and interesting when done well. We'll see what kind this is. Birmingham had praised it, not written it, my mistake. Just wanted to make a wrong right.....I'm starting The Company of The Dead by John Birmingham. Starts On the Titanic in 1912 with a timetraveller on board. He comes from a USA where the germans occupies the westcoast and the japanese the eastcoast. His mission to alter that future. I guess i'll find out how and what the Titanic has to do with that. Anyway it sounded interesting and it cost 50 Cent so it was worth a shot.
I've never read anything by Lansdale. fljoe0 mentioned Fender Lizards a while back, but the libraries in the area don't have it, so will eventually get my hands on it somewhere. Is there another novel of his you would recommend for a newbie?I started Dead On The Bones by Joe Lansdale (his ownself!) last night. It's a collection of long short stories, which he categorizes as 'pulp' tales, such as the type that were published in magazines back in the '30's and '40's. I've read 100 pages so far and they are great stories! Loves me some Lansdale!
I would recommend anything in his 'Hap & Leonard' series. You don't really need to start with the first one either, they're pretty much self contained books:I've never read anything by Lansdale. fljoe0 mentioned Fender Lizards a while back, but the libraries in the area don't have it, so will eventually get my hands on it somewhere. Thank you, my friend!I would recommend anything in his 'Hap & Leonard' series. You don't really need to start with the first one either, they're pretty much self contained books:
Savage Season, Mucho Mojo, The Two-Bear Mambo, Bad Chile, Rumble Tumble, Captain Outrageous, Vanilla Ride, Devil Red. These are mostly all set in East Texas so you're going to see the 'N' word in them. Sometimes it gets to me but I realize that that is how folks are down in those parts and Joe doesn't lie in his books. There's lots of humor in these books, too, it's not just all about solving murders or saving a kidnap victim.
You're welcome! Joe's been at this writing thing for a long time and I'm happy to see that he is finally getting the accolades that he deserves. His books sell more copies than they ever did (including his back titles) and there's a series based on his Hap & Leonard books on a cable channel that's doing quite well in the ratings and with the critics.Thank you, my friend!

I have come close to picking it when looking for a new book to read but always went with something else. When I do eventually pick up the Bachmann books this will be the 1st one I read.
After i finish The passage i'm starting this book, has anyone read it?
