I'm in the library at the moment and on the shelf under 'new releases' is Joyce Carol Oates' The Doll-Master and other tales of terror, so I might borrow that one.

“It says the continent has very few poisonous snakes…Oh, there’s a footnote.” His finger went down the page. “It says, ‘Most of them have been killed by the spiders.’ How very odd.”
Ah the apple doesn't fall far. His own style though.doowopgirl morgan
I loved Heart Shaped Box, too! I remember I was in maybe 30 pages and I thought, this reads like Stephen King. I checked the dust cover...Joe Hill? Don't recognize the name but I look at the back and see his photo and it was like ding! ding! ding! This must be SK son.
I was the same. The Fireman started out SO good. I was yay much better than I expected. But it did kind of just get too long. I've read plenty of books from that era, so I k am familiar with the prose style. I have started Monte Cristo and it is a good story. The mad monk has just died.I liked The Fireman well enough. At the beginning I was wildly enthusiastic, but that petered out as the story went on. The Mary Poppins refs got old FAST, and the protag wasn't particularly likeable. I still ended up sort of liking it, on the whole. (is that lukewarm praise, or what? sorry)
The Count of Monte Cristo is a good adventure story! Keep in mind the era in which it was written, and the literary conventions that were perfectly acceptable at the time (realism wasn't high on the list of priorities) , and you should enjoy it
I'll keep it in mind, thanks.Swan Song is great! Have you read Boy's Life? I liked this one the best so far of his.
I believe Madam Mack has read most of her books.Has anyone read Octavia Butler's Fledgling? I forgot I checked it out a couple of weeks ago and found it in my library bag, so I started it, but I dunno. The protag is a 53 year old vampire that looks 10/11. The problem for me isThe writing is lovely, but I'm not sure I can get past that. As I was reading, my husband asked me, "What the hell are you reading? You have the worst look on your face!"that within the first 3 chapters she's having sex with an adult human male. I don't care how old she actually is--she looks like a child.
So I guess what I need to know is if anyone else has read this book, and if it continues in this vein (HA!). If so, I'm probably finished and will move back to Children of Men.
I KNEW someone had! I just couldn't remember who! Thanks, SpideyI believe Madam Mack has read most of her books.

How are you doing?Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore, by Matthew Sullivan. Free review copy from Netgalley. It's shaping up to be one of my favorite novels of 2017 (so far).

GO TO YOUR ROOM AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU'VE DONE!!!....I come here everyday and scan what everyone's perusing, makes me feel like a sloth!....it appears that people are just busting through book after book after book and I am running backwards!....used to be able to consume books like cookies, now-I only take a few minutes a day....to much time on here I guess trying to relax, stress at work doesn't make it conducive to fall into the pages....feel bad, but at least I'm still reading right?....
