Started The Twelve, the second in Justin Cronin's vampire trilogy. Only read about the first 30 pages but found myself doing abit of skimming here and there. I just want to get to the story folks! Don't bog me down with mundane descriptions of crap.....
So I just finished reading The Twelve. It was okay. I don't know why this book isn't better. It's got a great premise when you get down to it, but somehow/someway it just doesn't gel the way it should. I liked The Passage much better.

That's some weird stuff, that Jaqueline Carey stuff. Lotta masochism or something. Gave it a try once, meh...not my cup of meat.

But when Quinn the Eskimo gets here, all the pigeons gonna run to him...

Sorry, radio.

I don't get the Eskimo reference...

Im not much into the masochism stuff either... in real life or in a book! But I paid $8 for the book so I'm darn well gonna read it!

He is quoting from an old song on the radio: The Mighty Quinn

I haven't read any Margaret Atwood...should I?

I just recently joined two clubs, one meets in person and the other is on FB. So far we have read All The Light We Cannot See, which I loved b/c i love WW@ Historical Fiction. The other book we have read so far is"Where'd You Go, Bernadette." That was a fast easy read that I only gave 3 stars on Goodreads.

The next book so far is "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn." I read this in High School and remember enjoying it. I am going to re-read since that was quite a long time ago!!

If you want to read a really really good book club type book I would suggest "The Power of One." That may be my all time fav book ever.
I like Margaret Atwood a lot. It has been a while since I read any of her stuff so it's hard to figure out what to recommend. I think I was about 19 years old when I first read her stuff (Had to read a book called "Surfacing" as required reading for a course I was taking).

I've recently started "Station Eleven" by Emily St. John Mandel. It's a novel set in a world where a flu pandemic has wiped out most of civilisation. I'm also working through "Emma" by Jane Austen. I'm really struggling with it though. The 200 year old style of writing is understandably very different to the modern novels I'm used to where the plot zips along, it's very very long winded. I'd like to finish it but not sure I have the patience.

I liked Station Eleven--didn't love it, but I liked it. End-of-the-world Shakespeare was interesting :) One storyline felt very shoehorned in, though. I'd be interested to hear what you think when you're finished!

Emma is pretty funny, once you adapt to the language. If you want the basics of the story (what's most important), watch the movie Clueless :) It's based on Emma and in its situations and relationships draws heavily from the book.

I've got so many books started that I'm annoying myself. The only things I've finished lately are graphic novels: American Vampire #1, Walking Dead #23, and the Battle of Jericho Hill (I got teary at the end of that one. Poor Alain! Poor Cuthbert! Poor Jamie! And poor, poor Roland :a17:). I have to finish a review book tomorrow, HAVE TO, but I'm having a difficult time. It's a well-written book, but flies in the face of most of the actual historical accounts I've read about Princess Elisabeth (Sisi) of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Good novel, maybe not so good at historical novel. Will be difficult to review.

I agree. And I'd add The Penelopiad and Alias Grace.
I forgot to mention that our expert on Atwood is you. Havent read the ones you mentioned actually.
Since you seem to like historical novels..... I'm thinking of reading some Gore Vidal. Only read Creation before by him but have been considering Burr, Lincoln, 1876 and Empire. Are they to be recommended? Or any others by him?

Interesting choice, let me know how you like it. The description makes it sound a bit sappy for my taste...but you never know!

Just finished Sing You Home. I enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would (and didnt find it sappy).
Very hard to put down. I love Picoult's writing so I'm surprised I hadn't read this one before, since it's a few years old.

I think maybe those who reviewed it negatively took issue with the lesbian aspect. I'm straight, but totally sympathized with many of the characters, no matter their orientation.

I've not read any by him! So many writers I have to try out. I've been looking for Sarah Pinborough's books around here--did you like the ones you've read?
