LOL. My mechanic says the engine light problem is a 'soft code' and is more of a costly nuisance and nothing I need to worry about. In PA you can't get the emission control part of the inspection passed with the engine light on. So when I take it to the shop to get it inspected I disconnect the battery and rehook it back up. That resets things long enough to get the emission control passed before the light goes back on.
Way to go---score one on the system!!

Now how did you get away with that? I went in for an emissions test on a pick up. The battery was dead and I had to jump it to even get it to the shop. They drove it in and drove it right back out within minutes. The girl asked me, "Was the battery disconnected?" And I said no, but it was dead and we had to jump it. Obviously I wasn't hiding anything.

She said, "A lot of people try to disconnect their batteries and then hook them back up to hide engine lights." She told me I needed to drive the truck for a while so the battery reset everything. I did. I took it back and it passed. But they know when people are trying to hide stuff. And if they let you get away with that, they are disreputable.
My mechanic is my wife's cousin and he has a relationship with the other shop that does the emission control part of the inspection. He's the one who told me the trick. The emission control inspection requirement is asinine and most mechanics around here agree it does little except cost the car owner gobs of money.

But it's not a trick. They know you've disconnected it. They know immediately. So, they are just letting you slide by. THey are choosing to be complicit in muuuuuder....

Because when you cause a wreck due to some engine problem you did not fix, you're screwed and sued and the business who let you play your" trick" on the unsuspecting family of 4 that you killed are conferring with your attorneys to get the story straight.

What? what?

I have yet to find anyone who has ever died because of a faulty catalytic converter.

Like someone tripping and impaling themselves on a blinged outdoor pink flamingo? ;):)
As far as I know, my flamingos have never thrown gang signs or put themselves in the path of a falling body.

Unlike your catalytic converter that I'm almost positive is wearing some officially approved gang apparel and has a tear drop tattooed on its Lambda probe.

The mechanic in Alberta took mine out without even asking! Said he was saving me gas. For the rest of the time I drove that Pontiac Sunbird I could swear there was a smell (plus it made my engine sound like a diesel). This was back in the 90s so I guess they could get away with that back then.
