Where the original idea for the story come from

So I read the book years ago and I've seen the movie several times. Last October I was in a bad car accident and I wasn't found for almost 24 hours. When I was found I was in a coma with no brain activity and a broken neck witch left me paralyzed from the chest down. I wasn't expected to wake up and have been told by Drs that I'm something they read about in medical journals but most never see. So I don't sleep much just read and watch movies, this morning I watched the Green Mile for the first time since the accident and this lost feeling thats been following around all of sudden turned into something else.
So my question is where did original idea for the story come from, I know about the series but I was wondering where Mr King came up with the idea that planted the seed. I know there's many depression era stories about healers that may or may not have turned into published fiction. Does anyone have information not pulled from Google as to the origin of the story?

Steve explains the genesis of the story idea in the Foreword to The Green Mile. It's a little long, and today is a busy day for me, or I would type it for you here.

Howdy Daniel Flowers. I vaguely recall that the mechanics of delivery was loosely based on how Dickens' "The Pickwick Papers" were done (I may be wrong). As far as the idea for the story itself...no clue.

That's in the Foreword along with the Dickens delivery method. :smile2:

    You're welcome!
And you were going to type that out? Or were you being silly?

I would have only typed the paragraphs about the electric chair idea, not the whole thing. :smile2:

....Welcome Daniel, and not to sound trite or patronizing-but the only thing that can't be trapped in that chair is your imagination....you'll find plenty of good folks and lots to think about here....
