So, my guess is correct?
Yes, your guess is correct. I quite recently watched the DVD version. It had some nice extras including a documentary film telling about the making of the movie. Christopher Lee even called some movie critics he knew back then and asked them as a personal favor for him to go and watch the film as it was not getting much attention.

I've seen part of it. I think I wasn't in the mood at the time to see what I knew it would amount to, you know?

Yes, I can totally understand. It's one of those movies that makes you uneasy. I hope that I find the time to read to book some day. "Some of the novel's scenes were originally shot for the film, but were cut to reduce running time and have not been seen since the loss of the film negative." I really enjoyed this movie quite a bit - eery atmosphere and rather sensual as well (the part where the blonde actress was pounding on the walls) - Britt Ekland, I think?
I was just reading they used a body double for the scenes of her from behind. The film is considered a cult classic now, even though it did not do well back in 73 when it came out.
