Try 'The Wasp Factory',,Set on a Scottish Island , well worth a read. ian rankin is a well known Scottish author. Almost all of his books are set in Edinburgh, and are crime novels. Enjoy.

He really was a great horn player!I love Dizzy Gillespie...
Oh you did not just call my Ewan an embarrassment...
I don't think it is a story about Scotland being on life-destroying drugs, I think it is a human condition story. You should be proud, I think it held more layers than what we sometimes first see.
And.... Ewan is awesome.
To me the semi autobiographical (Renton/ Rentboy is definitely based on Irvine Welsh himself) Trainspotting is a fantastic book. Ok it does show the dark side of life, but definitely doesn't sensationalize drug taking. For me it's a coming of age book and a great backlash at what Thatcherism (right wing political party politics) had done to the UK back in the early 80's. Renton was a really intelligent character, but because of his poor working class upbringing never had a chance. Very poignant to me.
Well said. Long time since I've read it but good book, and brilliant movie. Showing the darker side of reality (and that life is some people's reality) is nothing to be ashamed of. I've been fortunate enough to travel and have noticed there really are good and bad areas within all countries/cities/villages/estates etc...that's life.
Ooh and I love Scotland, this year alone I've visited Edinburgh and Glasgow twice, and also been to the Highlands and Loch Ness.
