I've seen two versions clean through; one being the less violent of two which are otherwise the same movie. I've seen an alternate ending, which I assume is the ending shot by the alternate director mentioned above, an ending I absolutely hate, and which turns everything previously viewed into a movie needing an good ending.

I'm just a dark, bleak ending kind of guy. ;-D

The Skin I Live In. This is a very strange story, based on Thierry Jonquet's novel Tarantula, directed by Pedro Almodóvar, about a surgeon obsessed with, among other things, revenge on a man he believes raped his daughter. I'm now interested in seeing anything Almodóvar.

America Lost And Found: The BBS Story (Criterion Collection blu-ray box set of 7 films from the late 60s and early 70s)

I bought this boxed set last week and I've watched 4 of the 7 movies so far. These are "art house" movies from the BBS production company. The BBS was formed from the profits of The Monkees TV show. The creator of The Monkees (Bob Rafelson) wanted to be a movie director and he took his profits and started the BBS production company. Rafelson was friends with Jack Nicholson who appears in several of these and Jack was even a writer of the Monkees' movie "Head." The films have been restored and are gorgeous. The soundtracks have all been restored and sound fantastic. Most of the films include the original sound format (which was mono in most case) along with 2 and 5.1 channel versions. The discs are loaded with interviews and extras. The films I've seen so far are:

Head - Surprisingly good movie starring The Monkees with cameos by many (even Frank Zappa). There is no story here but it is a fascinating psychedelic look at the late 60s. It's a fun movie that is charming and funny with some serious anti-war moments and some great music.

Easy Rider - I've never seen a version of this that looked so good as this blu-ray. Jack Nicholson's part in this movie is the glue of this movie.

Five Easy Pieces - I had seen it before but never as good as it looks on this blu-ray. Jack is magnificent (again).

The King Of Marvin Gardens - This movie has been missing in action for a long time. It has the same tone as "Five Easy Pieces" and may be Bruce Dern's greatest role. This movie is a good look at depressed, pre-casino Atlantic City too.

The others I haven't seen yet:

The Last Picture Show
Drive, He Said
A Safe Place

Slow West (2015) Kodi Smit-McPhee, Michael Fassbender

I liked this one. It's a Western but an unusual one. Kodi plays a young guy who travels from Scotland to the Old West to search for a woman he is in love with. He is very naive and doesn't realize how dangerous traveling through the Old West by himself is. He meets an outlaw who offers to act as a guide to help search for the woman.

Fassbender is a favorite of mine.

The Wicker Man (1973) Christopher Lee, Edward Woodward

I rented the blu-ray release of this from netflix. This movie has been restored and looks great. Apparently, there were multiple versions of this movie when it was originally released and the actual theatrical version (100 minutes) was lost long ago. There was a version released in America that was only 88 minutes long and some of the scenes were shuffled around (why can't Americans leave foreign movies alone?). This blu-ray is a 94 minute version with the scenes put back in order and is as close to the original as we are going to get. The picture quality is fantastic, especially compared to the washed out versions that have been issued before this. As far as the movie goes, it's a great creepy horror flick. If you haven't seen this blu-ray version, rent it - this is the version to watch.

Picked up a dvd copy a while back of The Blood Oranges and finally watched it last night. It stars Sheryl Lee (of Twin Peaks fame) and Charles Dance (probably best known in the US as the drug-addicted doctor in Alien 3). They play a married couple who end up seducing another couple that are visiting their town on holiday. Interesting take on the subject. I didn't like how Sheryl Lee portrayed her character- I felt she played it like the character might be just slightly mentally challenged and somewhat immature. Charles Dance is, as usual, wonderful. He makes acting seem so easy.

Joe (2013) Nicolas Cage, Tye Sheridan

My favorite genre - dark, bleak and gloomy with extreme poverty and little hope. ;-D This movie is the best Nicolas Cage movie I've seen in a long time. Cage plays an ex-con who runs a business that works for the lumber industry. He hires a 15 year old boy and soon discovers the boy is in a very abusive situation at home. I recommend it if you can handle bleak.

Tye Sheridan is the kid from the movie "Mud." Available for streaming on Netflix.
