Mad Max: Fury Road.

Well, I hope this isn't too disappointing. Grandma and a couple of the Descendants are still downstairs watching it. I watched it for 15 minutes, fell asleep for a few more, tried to watch a few more, got up, got snacks for everyone else, and gave up. Literally, I could not have enjoyed it less.

The technology and the mass of humans was completely unbelievable for the post-Armageddon world they were claiming. The, sure, nonstop action was pointless and computer-generated with characters lacking any sort of sympathy. I could not figure out the motivation for a single character, and if the motivation is bereft in the first 15 minutes, something's not getting done right. I could go on, but I simply could not find a single reason to enjoy this one.

I haven't read the book but I have read numerous discussions on the subject over the years and there is no definitive answer.
Apparently, it is not clear in the book either but most that have read the book seem to think he was shot. There are some people that think he was trying to commit suicide (movie people, not book people) but that doesn't make sense to me. Some say heart attack. I think he was shot.

I think that weighing him down with rocks was just to dispose of the body so they didn't have to explain it to anyone in case they were able to get out.

BTW - James Dickey, the author of Deliverance plays the sheriff. Dickey was a very well thought of poet. I don't think he wrote many novels.
Oh cool, thanks. I didn't know that about Dickey.

I was leaning towards suicide as he was just acting so odd when they started out after burying the guy. Rowing like a maniac, refusing to put on his life jacket, looking back but not answering when talked to. And then yes, he sort of shakes his head and tips off the canoe. He was so against the plan with the hillbillies, I think he just couldn't live with it. When they find his body, they are examining it and Ned Beatty keeps asking, was he shot, was he shot? And Jon Voight says there is a mark, but he could've gotten that on the rocks, but a doctor would be able to tell. I have the book in my TBR pile, I might just have to move it up. Thanks!

This was probably my favorite movie this past summer! For what it's worth, vey little was CGI--the sand storm, day for night, some crowd shots, and Charlize Theron's arm are pretty much it. Did you like the previous Mad Max films (in the interest of full disclosure, I didn't like much of Thunderdome besides the train bit at the end, and that was just about all that Martin directed himself of the film)?

I kinda remember the first one and remember kinda liking it. Road Warrior I liked quite a bit but didn't want to see it again. At least in that one, the protagonist was identifiable and sympathetic, in his own crude rude way, from the start. Memorable characters, with the kid and the gyro captain and all. Come to think of it, I liked it a lot. Thunderdome, I don't remember that much of it, except that I didn't care for it.

I apparently wasn't alone in my nonappreciation of Fury Road. After I left the viewing room, one of the Descendants fell asleep too.

Prisoners. Great cast: Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Maria Bello, Terrence Howard. Blurs a certain morality line and provides fodder for interesting conversations along the line of "what would you do?" Difficult to watch in certain scenes, and definitely neither a happy nor uplifting film, but certainly first-rate acting and story.

Mimic--decent Del Toro bug thriller. Roaches freak me out, so the first part was hard to watch. It wasn't high art, but there were plenty of good shots amongst some silly ones, and some of the acting was decent. I didn't know Josh Brolin was in this one!

Aguirre, The Wrath of God

Absolutely stunning. There was one part especially (after
they kick the horse off the raft
and Kinski is just staring intently) that was so powerful it seemed that every fibre of my being was completely immersed in it. I can think of very, very few movies that have had that effect on me.

That said, recent revelations about Kinski's utter depravity as a human being do make his scenes with his daughter uncomfortable. But, I can't take that out of the movie. So, I recommend it highly (that said, don't watch it if you just wanna chill, it's a thought-provoker).

Well said. I agree. Actually holds up after multiple viewings as well.

Miss You Already - more cancer comedy/drama. Not bad.
Solace - Hopkins as psychic after serial killer Farrell. Much deeper than you might think, food for thought in it.
Captive - true story of meth addict held hostage by murderer, reading from inspirational book. Thrilling start, then dull commercial for the book.
The Martian - crew member left behind on Mars, has to survive until rescue mission arrives. Very good.

Tried watching A Dame To Kill For. I dunno. I need to finish it, but I still don't think I'll care for it. Loved all the Sin City comics when they came out, but this...this just feels like a modern Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad World, or The Greatest Story Ever Told, in that it becomes a game of "let's spot the cameo" for all the hip actors who wanted to be in this thing. And I think I've written Rodriguez off. He makes great cartoon/ballet action scenes, but I don't think he's ever directed an actual FILM yet. And Frank Miller needs to stick to the damn comics.

And when, WHEN are they gonna put Joseph Gorden Levitt back in mothballs? Ugh, I cannot STAND the twerp, especially when he tries pulling the Tough Guy act. Please, just stop.

My daughter chose the movie last night. The Raven with Vincent Price and Boris Karloff (and a youngster called Jack Nicholson).
The usual VP farce -you either love him or hate him. I enjoy the cheesiness of most of his films. Edgar Allan Poe was probably spinning in his grave over it though.

The other night (before October Movie Marathon started :) ) I watched Gia again - bought a used DVD off ebay. Such a sad story. Angelina Jolie was stunning, hard to believe this movie is almost twenty years old.

I've seen most of this movie but never the entire thing. It is very sad. Such a beautiful woman and so self-destructive. She didn't need to die.

I don't know what's with me a sappy movies lately, but I watched another one: Begin Again with Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo and Adam Levine. It was adorable. Played liked a British Chic Lit book reads. I was happy.

I've got St. Vincent recorded. I might head up to bed to watch that tonight.
I really liked St. Vincent. Just finished a book on Bill Murray. He's a very interesting guy.
