I haven't smoked in 31 years.

I had habit cigarettes. Every time I bought a coke at a fast food joint, smoked. Got in the car, smoked. First thing in the morning, smoked. After I ate, smoked. What I did was just eliminate one of those "habit" cigarettes a week. I smoked all the others, but not the one I was working on. Once I conquered it, I moved onto the next habit one. It took me about a month or 3 to quit.
Removing triggers, one at a time, over time, that's freakin' brilliant:thumbs_up:

I certainly remember all the "triggers," especially lighting up immediately when I got in the car.

I always feel a little guilty when I tell people how easy it was for me to quit smoking, but that's really a bit of semantic gymnastics. I didn't really quit smoking . . . I quit drinking . . . and the cigarettes got lonely and left, too. That was more than five years ago, but those triggers still pop up once in a while.

That's smart.

DarkKrystl, how's the quitting going?

Slow, but better than it's ever gone before! I'm using the patch, but there's been a few days where I messed up and had to toss that days' patch. But I'm down from 6-8 a day to three or less, on average. And we've only been doing this for about a week, so while it may not sound like a lot of progress is being made, I feel very optimistic. My attitude is a thousand times better than it's ever been when trying to quit, and for the first time I'm thinking I just might win!

I think once you stop you have the best of both worlds. (having been a smoker you know how smokers feel about criticism, and becoming a non-smoker... you get to appreciate the freedoms/and benefits of this while also being able to be sensitive to both smokers and non-smokers.)

I was one of those awful people who hated smoking/smokers. Some poor little old lady in Scotland in 2005 sat a few seats away from me and asked if I minded if she smoked. (They still allowed people to smoke indoors in public places back then).

I just looked at her, got up and moved away :facepalm: (what a beeyatch, eh?)

I have lightened up a bit since then. Especially being married to a guy who smokes out on the deck when he is home from up North :belial:

Some of you may remember the old Steve Martin bit:

Smoker: Mind if I smoke?

Steve: Nope. Mind if I fart?

I also had a friend in school who would respond to "Do you mind if I smoke?" with "I don't care if you burn." But that's a little mean for this fine new century, it seems to me.

I remember when you could smoke in one section of a room (say - a restaurant or club) but there was no smoking in another area. A bit ridiculous when you think of it.

It is like saying "you can pee in this part of the pool, but not in that part".

I smoked (in my 20s) - yuk!

Mom smoked her whole life and died of pancreatic cancer :nope: - but I should not use the "C" word here or everyone will start, and I try to avoid the "Hot Topics".

Happy for you! I've never smoked, but most of the rest of my family does. It took being in a two-week coma from a severe asthma attack to get my mom to quit for reals and for good. You're doing great!

Wishing you and your husband the best of luck. The only way that I was able to quit was cold turkey. I tried the patch and that had zero effect for me. I was a bit anxious and irritable when I quit, I just had to ride it out. (I started chomping on celery, something about the crunch soothed me.) It will pass! It will help if you can find the thing that distracts you enough to get through the craving/anger. Think of things that sooth/calm you and maybe go with one? Best of luck to you.

Good for you! Music to my ears!

I've never smoked, but most of the rest of my family does.

Are we siblings?
