I've finished The Stand. I was disappointed with the climax, but, otherwise it's a fine book.

Currently I'm reading War of the Worlds and other science fiction classics by H.G Wells. After I finish that I'm going to finish Anton Chekhov's The Complete Short Novels. I enjoyed The Steppe, so I look forward to finishing the rest.

Oh man, that's a great book. Who wrote that one? I think it was John R. Censor, wasn't it? No wait...Edit by Willy Cutter. I loved the end, where Ruby Jean has to *honk!* her neighbors three *Beeps!* in order to show McDoogle what an *awOOOga!* she is. Spicy stuff!
...you just keep topping yourself my H2O drenched mammalian!...

Most of his older books are spy thriller types, I think. I have only read one of those. Pillars is really good and the sequel, World Without End was not as good but still pretty good. I have the first two of The Century Trilogy but have not read them yet. Need to get the third one. If you like historical fiction, Pillars is a good one to start with!
I just finished the second book of The Century Trilogy. Really like the way he blends family relationships, their story and world history. Looking forward to reading the third book. I also read Pillars And World without End. I enjoyed those books too. Similiar the way he tells family stories using history.

I finished The Robber Bride, an earlier effort by Margaret Atwood. It was a fun read and the writing was good, but I have to admit I like her writing and subject matter from The Handmaid's Tale on much better.

I just downloaded a sample of The Wonder by Emma Donoghue (Room) and so far so good. Taking place in the 1800s, the plot involves a nurse traveling from England to Ireland to observe and care for a girl who has not eaten for 4 months yet is still alive and basically healthy. I'm not exactly sure where it goes from there but it is intriguing and once I am finished with the sample I will probably purchase the book and read the rest of it.

I just noticed that SK himself reviewed this book for the NYT Book Review. He gave it what amounts to a solid B in my opinion from my interpretation of reading the review.

Need help picking a book? I'm the Book Whisperer, Renegade Librarian Extraordinaire! ;)

lmao! Y'know I am now picturing you standing on the current books table at the library, your cape flowing in the breeze from the ceiling fan, placing books in patrons' hands and telling them, "Read this! You'll like it!"

Ok Book Whisperer Renegade Librarian Extraordinaire, pick a book for me :) I like ghosts and time travel :)

No cape, lol, but you nailed the rest. Hmmm, my immediate two choices are probably books you've already read or, at the very least, heard about. Ghost Story by Peter Straub and The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. I liked them both. I'd need to know a little more about your reading tastes/sensibilities but here are some mysteries you may want to try.
1.) Them Bones by Carolyn Haines (Book one in a series about a failing actress who returns to Mississippi to save her ancestral home which happens to be haunted by a ghost named Jitty. The African American ghost has resided in her home for generations and has become the protagonist's conscience, in a way. Try this only if you enjoy a humorous turn in an otherwise Southern Gothic.)
2.) The Devil's Hearth by Philip DePoy (Here's another modern day Southern Gothic with plenty of folklore, oddities, and Shakespeare references.
Fever Develin is the young, white-haired protagonist that lives alone in the Appalachian hills of Georgia and he's haunted by his past and, with the help of his childhood pal Skidmore (now Sheriff), he solves mysteries. The whole series is an engrossing, literary banquet of characters and spooks.
Lighter than Elizabeth George but as substantial as one could ask for in a mystery genre.)
3.) Drowning Ruth by Christina Schwarz (If you haven't read it, trust me. It's neither time-travel nor ghost story but it's very atmospheric and somehow the shoe fits. Gripping read.)
Hopefully, this is a beginning and there's a winning match in the bunch. ;)

I'm undecided as to what to read next. I was thinking about the dark tower series and what I know to be connected to them and Little Sisters of Eluria came to mind, but I read the intro note and thought maybe it would be best to read The Talisman first. Now I'm back to square one, what to read? I still have a few juicy fan favourites including the afore mention talisman, Under the Dome, Needful Things, and do people like the Dead Zone? There are also a few that aren't considered fan favourites like From a Buick 8, Insomnia, the Long Walk (and the other bachman books).

Well well Mr. Librarian Extraordinaire, those are extraordinarily good suggestions :) I've read Ghost Story and it was good but I havn't read The Time Travelers Wife. I'm going to try The Devils Hearth first. I love Southern Gothic mysteries :)

Just finished Broken Harbor, the fourth in Tana French's Dublin Murder Series. Thoroughly enjoyed it. muskrat, the book is written from the point of view of a lead detective, and the voice French gives him reminded me of your writing. I think you'd like it; even though this is part of a series, it's a totally stand-alone book as well.

I'm now reading The Poison Tree, and it's very good so far.
