Be aware if you read the comics, it may ruin some things for you. They've taken turns and brought in new characters not in the books, deaths and survivors are somewhat different too, but it could spoil stuff for you.
I will say this, the Dwight in the comics is different in some ways, and also did not show up until about the same timeline point as the show is at now. Daryl was not in the comics at all, and a lot of his actions I cant assign to other characters.
For the record I stay current with comics, which is currently at issue #159. The point the show has reached, the first meeting with Negan, takes place in issue #100 in the comics. So to gauge the story point differences, it took 6 seasons to do 100 issues. That means there is approximately 3.5 seasons worth of content available to cover. In the meantime, the comic will add an additional 50 issues approximately. Essentially if the comic continues at its current pace and the show does too, they will always stay about 3 years ahead.
