20. Cult of Chucky -- New

"Chucky returns to terrorize his human victim, Nica. Meanwhile, the killer doll has some scores to settle with his old enemies, with the help of his former wife."

Apparently I am behind on the Chucky train. I was not familiar with Nica and the gang. But, it was entertaining. Personally, Jennifer Tilly is the one that is the most fun to watch in these.

This one has been called a seminal vampire film though after seeing it I think it is more the second definition of that word. It's directed by French film maker Jean Rollin and has subtitles. I don't know how to describe it so I'll just give a synopsis.

It starts simply enough. Two bisexual teen girls in clown costumes and face paint just escaped from a reform school are being chased and shot at as they return fire from their car. I think they had forty shot revolvers. The driver (a male) is shot but they manage to out run then ditch the pursuers on a side road. The driver dies so naturally they set him on fire in the car and head across fields on foot where they continue a crime wave on a stolen motorcycle.

For some reason one of the girls is nearly buried alive by the most oblivious grave digger to ever live. Next they find a castle and have lesbian sex until screams interrupt. Bad goings on in dungeon are evidenced by a flayed man but other than that just a lot of vampire orgy. Forty shot revolvers are unleashed to no avail. Escape is foiled by the castle being in all directions. Lots of chasing and nakedness later they decide to lure the grave diggers for the vampires to feast on but lo one girl has a conscience not evidenced here to fore.

One girl wants to become a vampire and one does not. Naked chain bondage flagellation later and some vampire conscience unexpected result in them leaving. I'm not kidding. It has to be in my top ten strangest films ever. I'm left feeling dirty and confused. At least I can say I've seen a vampire bat suck blood from a woman's privates for the only time ever but I'm not sure it was worth it.

"Six complete strangers of widely varying personality characteristics are involuntarily placed in an endless maze containing deadly traps."

I really had high hopes for this one, as I like these locked-in-a-room mystery type things. I just didn't get it. Maybe I blinked at an important time, or walked into the kitchen for a slab of cabbage, or baby talked to the cats. I don't know what I was supposed to get from this. I will have to look it up as obviously my attention waivered.

8 - once upon a time when i was but a youngster, during a week i stayed with my dad, they were running a creature feature week on USA? or some network. a week of movies about killer bugs. things i should *not* have been watching at that age (7? maybe, i forget exactly). watched them all week, and boy did i toss and turn that week. so i decided maybe i'll revisit some of these, 20 odd years later. first up was The Nest - carnivorous cockroaches invade an island village. the product of an experiment gone wrong, the only person who fully understands them is the doctor who created them, who spends most of the movie acting like she'd like to have sex with them more than she'd like to solve the problem. creepy. it's a definite B movie, so take it for what you will. bugs are creepy, so up until they go full ham on the effects it has an ick factor, it gets a little bit unbelievable and silly near the end. there's also entirely too much personal conflict between characters in a movie that's just supposed to be about bugs that eat people, most of which comes to naught because of course, people are getting eaten, so their conflicts sort of drop down the scale of importance.

I figured since I have the poster I would watch this. What the devil was up with the ending? Did they just run out of film or something? Great poster though.

they basically out thought themselves. instead of just straight killer roaches . . . what if we gave them the ability to take on human form! it'll be so cool guys, really! . . . i mean, it skips a few steps of evolution, but they're film makers, not scientists ya know. something something genetic experiments, we're good to go guys, everyone will totally buy it!

I agree DJ, it is one of the very best. There's some rough stuff in this one! Oh how I love the portmanteau films! And there's a mystery involving VOH I was slightly obsessed with for a bit. Thought you might be interested.

BLACK HOLE REVIEWS: VAULT OF HORROR (1973) - missing a few zombies

(edit!) Dana, I see that you've seen Burnt Offerings. What did you think? I saw it years ago & was not that impressed. But now somehow, I'm crazy about it. I think Karen Black's star began waning just after this. It seems like by the 80's she was no longer a name. And she was fantastic! Not just in this. Great cast all the way around. Oliver Reed was an interesting choice.

"A family moves into an old, haunted house that regenerates itself by feeding off of the life forces of its injured occupants."

One of my old standbys. I just love this movie for some reason. I saw it as a kid and it's always been one of my favorites.

I find it interesting that they rent this house for the summer. They actually have to repair and maintain the house, along with baby sitting "mother," and they PAID the owners 900 dollars for the privilege of being indentured servants to this hell hole.

Well aren't I a silly arse, you reviewed it already. The scene in the beginning, in the parlor was fantastic. Eileen Heckart, Burgeess Merideth, and Dub Taylor(!!!), all chewing the scenery in the most wonderful way. When I watch it I practically scream, "Keep the character actors comin'!" And anyone who has seen the film is going to remember this guy.

9. continuing my saga of revisiting these old movies from the once upon a time week of creature features that scarred me in my youth, i revisited an old . . . "classic" about man eating slugs. i'm not sure where to start with this one, other than to say, it's amazing what looks scary to a kid. this adventure, titled Slugs: The Movie (i'm guessing they added that last part in, lest you be confused and think you're watching a documentary), has so much going for it. most of it going downhill. a random score. seriously, the music is just weird. enough wooden acting to build a house out of. thoroughly unlikeable characters, who don't react normally to any situation. and i couldn't tell if it was just the version i was watching, but i think i read the film maker was spanish, and it seemed like half the cast consisted of people who didn't actually know english sort of mouthing their lines for later dubbing. and by mouthing i mean, moving their mouths so little it seemed like they got confused and thought they were in a ventriloquist act instead of a movie. stellar dialogue like "so you were serious when you said we were going fishing?" (said while sitting on a fishing boat in the middle of a lake, so presumably a rhetorical question), or (in reference to one person's ability to authorize something) "you don't have the authority to declare happy birthday!" throw in some rather ridiculous death scenes, such as slugs, which aren't that much bigger than regular slugs, dragging someone into a lake by their foot, or slugs biting a mans hand inside his glove, causing him to flail about his greenhouse until he accidentally blows himself up. but not before he decides to solve the problem of slugs biting his hands inside his gloves by cutting his hand off with a hatchet, because i guess that's the easiest way to get the gloves off?

the hero of the story is the local health inspector. not really your normal movie hero, it's up to him to convince everyone of this scourge of murderous slugs. as the bodies start piling up, our heroic health inspector starts throwing the words mutant slugs around all willy nilly and without easing people into it at all, then broods over how people just won't listen to his extremely anemic presentation of the facts. shockingly enough, throwing the phrases "just trust me" and "mutant slugs" around doesn't really gain any traction with the powers that be. meanwhile, bodies are piling up every few minutes, to the apparent delight of one of the deputies, who needs some excitement in his life, and is enjoying all the extra activity at work. the sheriff doesn't seem to have much function beyond shouting gruffly at anyone who's nearby, so what can our hero do? luckily, he makes friends with a helpful sanitation worker, who just so happens to be able to fill in the blanks about our mutant slugs, using his knowledge of the old toxic waste dump, and one of the worst drawn maps in history. together, with the local high school science teacher, who has a lab that would make any chemist jealous, they hatch a plan to douse the slugs in the sewers with a chemical that explodes when it touches moisture. "you want to toss a chemical that catches fire when it touches water into the sewers?" asks our handy sanitation man. "what choice do we have?" implores the health inspector. "okay, let's do it!" while the heroes prepare their slug assault, we get a few more random deaths, and then it's time for the final act. which consists of them throwing a chemical into the town sewers that blows up half the town from below, which, by the way, they neglected to tell anyone they were doing. safety first!

and everyone that wasn't eaten lived happily ever after.

this is actually based on a book, and i can't really decide if i ever want to read it.

I think I'm on #10 now? Not sure and I was too lazy to backtrack. Regardless:

#10 (I think): Train to Busan: This has already been touched upon and it keeps popping up in those lists you find on social media about the 10 best horror movies on Netflix, yada, yada, yada...So I figured I'd give it a whirl. Have to say, I enjoyed it immensely. As much as I love a good zombie flick, it's become a rather tired formula in the last few years. I'm pleased that Train to Busan managed to breathe some life into the genre. More action that straight up horror, but definitely worth a watch if you're into that sort of thing. 8/10 for this one.

And of course, episodes 4-5 of Mindhunter. For a show that consists almost entirely of dialogue, it's really creepy.

Can someone tell me, is Fight Club horror???? I have never seen it and was browsing Google searches that suggested top 20 horror movies, best horror movies, psychological horror movies and Fight Club was listed as one of them.
My xfinity on demand Horror filter has The Incredible Hulk listed, so I think it's probably not what you would call Horror. My guess, it's in there for bloody reasons.;-D

Ohhhhh. Okay.

Hulk's performance was solid, sinister and at times, supernatural. His skills in portraying the big lug was phenomenal while still giving us the ambience of normality with a touch of..uh, I'm just bullsh*tting.

Why do they throw in these things that aren't horror? I guess one man's horror is another's green skin condition documentary.

I wouldn't classify Fight Club as horror at all, or even a thriller. I'd call it psychological drama, if there is such a thing. I'd be curious to read your impressions of it. It's an interesting film (I've not read the novel), with very good performances. And, you know...Meat Loaf.
