I was about to respond with "I love that movie and the book it's based on" and then realized you were talking about The Others (plural) and not The Other (singular). I find the latter movie (and book) from 1972 and 1971 respectively, brilliant. I remember reading the book sometime in the late 70s and being horrified by many of the passages and imagery. I still get an eerie feeling when I think about it. Thomas Tryon was a wonderful writer. He left this world much too soon.
Thank you for the rec! I've often seen his books at the local Savers, and wondered if they were worth buying. I'll definitely pick them up next time I see them.

Harvest Home is good scary fun and Lady is a great coming of age story with a twist set in the 1930s/40s. It is probably his most well-written novel. It's lovely.

26) The Exorcism of Emily Rose
27) Last Shift - nothing particularly new or special, but not God-awful either. 2.7/5
28) The Watcher in the Woods (1981) - I'd heard about this one but had never seen it before. Not sure what I was expecting, but that ending wasn't it. Still OK, though, all things considered. 2.5/5
29) Pod - interesting premise and a couple of OK-good performances. Overall it's too slow, though, and the female lead can't voice act to save her life - when she whispers, she really whispers, then when she screams and yells it all becomes incoherent due to the volume, etc, because she is actually screaming rather than acting. There's nothing terribly new about the (thin!) plot, either. Basically, not quite 90 minutes felt closer to two and a bit hours. 1.7/5
30) The Thing (1982) - a sorbet of sorts. After Pod it was like drinking a fine wine after tasting something closer to paint stripper. I know this movie inside out and backwards, or it feels like I should having seen it so many times. A classic.
31) Quatermass and the Pit
32) They Live - you could argue it's more SF than horror, but those aliens are a bit scary-looking and hey, we live in that world now (minus the aliens, afaik), no disguise or sunglasses necessary. That's the really scary part.
33) The Fog (1980) - ditto
34) The Frankenstein Theory - so what if the Frankenstein story was a fictionalised account of the truth? That's the basic premise. And if you know the creature from the book, you'll see the ending of this film pretty much in its beginning. And it was done found-footage style. 2.2/5

Still to watch before I'm done for this year:
Tonight: Maggie - Arnie in a film about a guy looking after his daughter as she becomes a zombie. Sounds like it might be interesting. Probably won't be. That'll be followed by one of my favourite films ever: Alien
Tomorrow: Friday the 13th (1980); The Visit
Sunday: the 49ers game. :D No, I'm kidding. It'll be a Day of the Triffids BBC-TV series marathon followed by Psycho (1960)
Monday: The Birds, Creepshow, Halloween (1978)

28. The Hallow (FTV)
Mythical creatures in an Irish forest rise up against a British conservationist and his family for the crime of encroaching on their territory. Many viewers complain about slow-burn movies, that they take too long to get to "the good stuff", but "The Hallows" has the exact opposite problem. It's in such a hurry to get to the monsters, that once they're revealed there really isn't much for the viewer to be intrigued about. So you just kind of sit there watching it play out, not really being involved in any way. I could have stopped watching this movie at the 35 minute point, really nothing new happens after that except more of the same monsters menacing the same family, over and over, without any real sense of tension.

It doesn't help that the characters aren't really characters at all, there's nothing compelling about them as human beings, they are just brainless props to move the movie along. In its basic superficial concept, this movie would appear to have a lot of things I'd want in a horror movie, but the execution is just totally botched.

2 out of 5 stars.

38. I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House -- This was a new entry on Netflix. I really liked this. But wait, before you watch it, there is something you should know -- it is a think piece. A very slow character study. There are very few scares. Pretty much no action. A smidge of blood. It is like a poem that has been made into a movie.

The opening soliloquy is just beautiful.

With all the gore and stuff I've watched, I just really liked this slow-paced story. It had a quiet beauty to it. Paula Prentiss plays the old lady. I liked her in Stepford Wives.

"Hired to care for a reclusive elderly author (Paula Prentiss), a live-in nurse (Ruth Wilson) comes to believe her house is haunted."

1-10. All of the "Halloween" movies from the John Carpenter original thru the Rob Zombie remakes.

11. The Conjuring

12. The Conjuring 2

13. All Hallows Eve...gratuitous clown murder movie. Not great, but entertaining.

14. Lords of Salem....My 4th time watching this one, still clueless as to what it's actually about.

15. Trick or Treat. 1986 movie about satanic rock star who returns from the dead and shoots lightning bolts from his guitar. The cheese was pretty thick on this movie...

16. The Faculty. One of the better soundtracks I've ever heard in a movie, and a great Sci-Fi horror flick to boot.

17. Disturbing Behavior. Similar to The Faculty. Nick Stahl and William Sadler. I'm convinced William Sadler is one of the most underrated actors. He seems to be able to play any role very well.

18. The Black River Vampire. Not terrible, they were definitely trying to go the way of "The Blair Witch Project" but I like those kind of movies. A bit of a bizarre ending. Rosemary's Baby meets a Twilight Zone episode....

19. The Thing (1982). Wouldn't be a true horror movie marathon without this one.

20. Wrong Turn. Hadn't watched this one in a while. Hillbilly cannibals and extremely hot female leads, including Eliza Dushku. Not much not to like in this one.

21. The Hills Have Eyes (2006). Debated on letting my son watch this one with me last night but gave in. I remembered this one being a little heavy on the violence side but then my son reminded me I had let him watch the Rob Zombie versions of Halloween less than a week ago....hard to argue with that logic. Wasn't as horrific as I remembered it to be and still a good movie. Found myself giggling at some of the over the top violence....WTH is wrong with me....lol

22. House of 1000 Corpses.

23. I Spit On Your Grave (2010 version with Sarah Butler). Hadn't seen this one in a while. Helluva revenge movie.

24. The Cabin In The Woods. Seen this one several times but still just as weird.

25. DEF-CON 4. 1985 post nuclear war type movie with cannibal humanoids. Campy but watchable.

26. The Vatican Tapes. This one was just coming on cable when I woke up this morning which gave me an excuse to stay in bed. Not a bad movie, ending was solid.

27. Grave Encounters. I'm not sure how I missed this one but other than the classics I've watched so far, this makes #1 on my list of horror movies I've watched so far for the marathon. Paranormal "Ghost Hunters" show producers enter a huge abandoned mental asylum. Sounds like it's been done before but they make it work very well. Solid movie.

28. Grave Encounters 2. Whoever produced this movie obviously didn't consult the formula for the first Grave Encounters. This one was was boring from start to finish.

29. Hell comes To Frogtown. Post apocalyptic movie starring "Rowdy" Roddy Piper...enough said. Piper has to rescue a group of fertile women from a mutant leader who resembles a frog in order to try and repopulate the planet...he also has to perform said rescue with a bomb strapped to his junk. There's an Oscar plot somewhere in this one..;) Barely stayed up long enough to finish this one last night. Last peek at the clock showed 12:55am....

30. Extraterrestrial. Another sci/fi horror flick. Same director who did Grave Encounters directed this movie. Not much new here as far as the alien abduction genre but the aliens are quite a bit more violent which was kind of cool. Some good splatter kills, worth watching.

31. The Gallows. I wish I could buy back 90 minutes of my life. Pretty much bored the whole time but my son seemed interested in it so I sat thru it. Definitely meant for a younger crowd not so much for an old grouchy horror movie veteran....

32. The Entity (1982). I found this one going thru my old DVDs. Still a pretty good demon movie. Worth a watch. Barbara Hershey does a good job.

33. Madison County (2011). Another of my stored DVD finds.
index.php
This movie was shot one county east of where I live. I watched it a few years ago but couldn't remember if it was any good or not. Turns out it wasn't completely terrible. A lot of familiar roads and landmarks. Some scenes were shot here in Fayetteville and others were shot over in Madison County near a very small speck on the map called Oark. Basic backwoods horror movie plot but reasonably well done.

34. Evil Dead (2013). Good re-make. I very much liked this one.

35.The Exorcist III: Legion. Hadn't watched this one in a few years. Brad Dourif does an excellent job in this movie.

36.Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. Good gore factor but I still like the original sequel better with Dennis Hopper.

37.Body Bags. 1993 horror anthology by John Carpenter. I hadn't seen this one in many years, I remember why now. The stories weren't terrible but I think they were more concerned with celebrity cameos than story substance.

38. Ghost Story. Other than Craig Wasson's voice, this is still a very creepy movie.

39. Nightbreed (Director's Cut). Some very good added material to the original theater version.

11. Last Shift (2014)

A rookie police officer is assigned to wait alone in a closing police station for a clean-up crew. The station just happens to be haunted by a cult leader that was killed there a year earlier. A very scary creepy movie (available on Netflix). 7/10
Have to make a correction -- I got this suggestion from fljoe's list this year. I knew somebody watched it!
