I used to be the same way. I loved my flip-flops. I wore them almost everywhere. I had to quit wearing them a few years ago when I developed calf muscle problems. I had to relearn how to walk properly because you don't actually walk heel to toe in flip-flops.

That's frightening. I had a veebrum (sp?) enthusiast tell me flip flops were great because it's so close to being
barefoot.

I'm a bad heel walker anyway. Half the reason my heels suck so hard is because I spend my days barefoot or close to it, drilling all my 185 pounds down on my heels. You definitely know when I'm coming, that's for sure!

But just out of curiousity, what do we do when wearing flip flops? I'm betting it's a subconscious thing?

The deformities don't bother me. People can't help when things physically happen to their feet. It isn't about that. It's the toenails and the dry skin. Clean those babies up and I'm fine with them.

Normally, you’d lift your foot and land heel first followed by the ball and the toes would hit the ground last. However, when you wear flip flops, your toes are forced to make a squeezing motion to get a grip on the loosely-fitting sandals. This causes you to land toes first. Or you end up just dragging your feet and barely lifting your legs at all as you walk. These are unnatural walking strides which put pressure on the lower part of your legs, inevitably harming the upper parts of your legs as well. If flip flops are your go-to footwear and you wear them for several hours a day, you’ll eventually start walking with that unnatural stride even when you are barefoot or wearing better shoes. Most of the other reasons that flip flops ruin your gait and foot health expand on this basic premise.

It took me a while to get used to leading with my heel instead of my toe :( I still have my Teva flip-flops scattered around - I'm just calling them scorpion killers rather than shoes :)

Have you ever tried a few tablespoons of Epsom salts,in a nice hot basin of water?I sometimes get foot pain from standing or walking, and Epsom salts are great,a side benefit is it makes your skin nice and smooth..try it every night for a week or two and see if makes a difference, bet you will like it!

Unfortunately, I can no longer wear *real* shoes. Crocs and sandals (not flip-flops) are it for me, even in the winter. I'm sorry if my bare feet bug anyone -- I do keep them clean and neat -- but it's necessary for me. o_O
My mom is the same. Bare or nearly bare feet greatly improve her balance (she has MS). I worry about cuts/punctures in summer and frostbite in winter because she really can't feel her feet at all. I finally found some very soft moccasins with a rubberized, slightly textured bottom that she could wear this winter; now I'm trying to come up with something for summer. Has anyone tried those shoes that look like feet?

The toe next to my big toe is longer, so these probably wouldn't work for me.....

The toe shoe, or Veebrum sole, (again not too sure about spelling) is the famous "barefoot" shoe. I've tried both the toe shoes and the "real shoe" version, and personally prefer the ones that look like real shoes. For people that would rather go barefoot, or that have to go barefoot for their health, the Veebrum sole is a great option. The only problem is, they're kind of pricey. (I use skater shoes from WalMart as an alternative.) You can find them at Scheels, and I bet most "high class" shoe stores will either carry them or know where you can find them.

Thank you! I'm going to do some research and then get her out to try some on :)

....I used to wear tennis shoes, and good ones, to work everyday-but after some consideration, I have switched to calf-high tactical/military style boots....I figure if I get in a dust-up at work, then I want to be able to do some real stompin'.....plus, less danger to my piggies if the inmate(s) tries to stomp ME.....sooooo, when I'm home-I wear Nike or Adidas slip on flips....much more comfortable and I wear the damn things year round, as long as there ain't a foot of snow on the ground......drives Tracy nuts cuz I'm out in public in the Winter with her, looking even more like a dork than normal....bothers me not a whit...

It must take awhile for the coldness to reach your brain since it's so far away from your feet......;;D
